Would this ruin a lovely name?

We really like the name Philippa for a little girl but was wondering if spelling the name with a 'Y' would just not work. So it would be Phylippa Ivy or Phylippa Mary. TIA

It looks weird to me tbh, and she'll be constantly correcting people's spelling/pronunciation of it. Why not just spell it the normal way?

pictish · 11/08/2013 16:29

What's wrong with the usual spelling? The y certainly doesn't enhance the name any, so why bother?

ImaginaryHat · 11/08/2013 16:31

I don't like it and do personally by think it spoils it, but its what you think that matters.

Is there any particular reason you want to spell it with a y?

Lucaslovesfelicity · 11/08/2013 16:31

Yes, that's what I was thinking. I am not one for messing around with the spelling of names but a dear family member of mine was Phyllis. I don't really want to have Phyllis as a first or middle name, as we have got a Felicity in the family, which sounds similar.

It just looks very odd.

Methe · 11/08/2013 16:34

Awful and pointless. Phillippa Mary or Philippa May are both lovely names.. If you spell them sensibly.

pictish · 11/08/2013 16:35

Well it doesn't work, so you'll just have to find another way of honouring Phyllis. x

HalfSpamHalfBrisket · 11/08/2013 16:35

I've never seen it spelled like that and, to me, it makes the name look somehow unbalanced.
What advantage do you see from using this spelling?

HalfSpamHalfBrisket · 11/08/2013 16:35

sorry cross post

HorryIsUpduffed · 11/08/2013 16:36

Roaring with laughter at the spelling.

Phyllida if you particularly want to honour the Phyl- link?

There was a Neveyah on CBeebies birthdays this morning Biscuit

HorryIsUpduffed · 11/08/2013 16:37

Also, Felicity sounds very nearly as similar to Philippa as to Phyllis to me, tbh.

Pancakeflipper · 11/08/2013 16:38

Trying too hard IMO. It's a great name why screw about with it?

Lucaslovesfelicity · 11/08/2013 16:40

Thanks for the advice, all points took on board :-)

Queazy · 11/08/2013 18:38

I'm honestly not sure why you would do that - just spell it the usual way x

katydid02 · 11/08/2013 18:43

Sorry but I think it looks weird. Did your Phyllis have a middle name? Maybe you could use that. I have a Phyllis in my family and she goes by the name of Phil - with an I - so you are honouring your Phyllis if she does the same thing.

Lucaslovesfelicity · 11/08/2013 19:01

Thank you Katy, I appreciate your feedback :). Yes she was known as Phil a lot of the time, so no need to change things for the sake of it. Mary was her middle name, which I too love x

It's a lovely name. But made slightly uglier by your spelling. Chose it but with one of the two standard spellings

HorryIsUpduffed · 11/08/2013 19:06

There aren't two standard spellings. There's one correct spelling (one L, total of three Ps) and one common misspelling (two Ls, total of two Ps). Wink Grin

KateCroydon · 11/08/2013 19:42

Please don't. Philippa known as Phil is ace.
