Do you like the name Wilfred

We are expecting our second baby in January (v excited), we don't know the sex and we are a bit stuck on boy?s names. We love Edward, Ted for short, but we are put off by the Twilight association and due rise in popularity. My husband dislikes Fred :( and we ruled Alfred out due to its popularity. We love Wilfred, which is a family name and we are keen to hear your thoughts. Our boy will probably go to the local comprehensive school, so we don't want him to be bullied (obvs) but we love Wilfred as it's a bit unique and Wil / Wilf is nice for short.

It's lovely, but if your DH dislikes Fred, it could be a problem. You may decide not to call him that, but you can't control what others will call him. (Although, nicknames have a life of their own, and he may end up being called, I don't know, Fish, or something.)

BTW, people are never bullied because of their name. The bullies may choose to use their name as something to bully them about, but may equally choose the colour of their coat, or the fact that they are good at maths.

Great name. Agree with SC that you may not be able to avoid the nn Fred tho.

PinkGlove · 11/08/2013 12:24

I know a 'Wilfie' - think that's a lovely nn for Wilfred.

Ginformation · 11/08/2013 14:05

I love it! (its on our list too, family name)

formicadinosaur · 11/08/2013 14:09

Love it. Love will and wilf

tumbletumble · 11/08/2013 14:11

I think the Twilight popularity is on the wane now, so I wouldn't let that put you off Edward for a baby due next year.

OverTheFieldsAndFarAway · 11/08/2013 14:13

Wilfred no, Edward yes.

roweeena · 11/08/2013 18:03

In response to you title - yes

kiwik · 11/08/2013 23:41

Yes, yes, yes. Very much so. Timeless and classic. Love it.

sonlypuppyfat · 11/08/2013 23:44

Wilf Hmm no

TheSydenhamSet · 11/08/2013 23:45

I think Wilfred is lovely. I know a young Wilfred who has a sister called Edith. Wonderful pairing

TheSydenhamSet · 11/08/2013 23:46

I love Edward too and that would certainly be on my list should I have another ds. It's a classic English name that doesn't date

TheFillyjonk · 11/08/2013 23:49

Yes, it's a lovely name and not so obscure that nobody would have heard of it. It makes me think of Wilfred Owen and his war poetry.

FixItUpChappie · 12/08/2013 00:06

decidedly not, no. Sorry but you asked.

FixItUpChappie · 12/08/2013 00:08

to Wilfred that is.....these names are a bit too formal for my own personal taste

AcrylicPlexiglass · 12/08/2013 00:16

I know 3 lovely little boys called Wilfred so am a fan of the name. I didn't realise that Alfred (as opposed to Alfie) was popular.

almapudden · 12/08/2013 00:18

Yes, it's nice.

Viviennemary · 12/08/2013 00:29

Not Wilfred. But Edward yes.

Manchesterhistorygirl · 12/08/2013 01:04

Yes to Wilfred, also makes me think of Wilfred Owen.

MrsDibble · 12/08/2013 14:03

I don't like it - I think some of these overly old-fashioned names (Alfie, Archie, Albert/Bertie etc) are going to sound silly again in a few years as they would have when I was at school in the 1980s. There is a reason why these names were previously out of fashion folks!

I quite like Edward though - it's traditional without being studiedly old fashioned, and has a more pleasing sound than Wilfred.

sonlypuppyfat · 12/08/2013 15:51

MrsDibble exactly what I think they are so silly, old men names I don't get it at all. Its like the granny names too.

TiggyD · 13/08/2013 21:36

No. Not just a grandad name, but a bent over 96 year old great grandad, 5'4", shabby flat cap wearing, hen pecked one from Last Of The Summer Whine.

Bumblebee78 · 13/08/2013 21:54

Sorry, not for me thanks. I dont get the trend of old people names. I just think about when they are older and on the pull! So then handsome, whats your name? Er wilfred, oh, turn off!

Monstamio · 14/08/2013 08:22

To everyone talking about "old people's names" remember that names are cyclical. When I was growing up in the 80s my aunt who is now quite elderly said she just couldn't understand why so many people were calling their children Laura and Sarah as to her they were granny names. I thought she was mad as to me and my friends they couldn't be more normal.

FWIW her name is Shirley and there were loads of them in her class at school. I think it's a complete no-no of a name now but bet in 10-15 years time it comes back again.

I like Wilfred btw but struggle yo get past Wilf as a nn.

sonlypuppyfat · 14/08/2013 08:31

Do you think when my DCs grow up their kids will be called Craig, Dean and Gary?
