Sooo which one?

Another vote for Ruth (am definitely not biased!)
I loved my name growing up as it was strong, unique but not too strange sounding.

I do like Rachel too (and funnily enough it was my parents' other choice) but it sounds a bit 'mousy' to me.

KnittedWaffle · 08/08/2013 16:52

Btw I grew up in the south east and the 'roof' thing was never a problem.

CruCru · 08/08/2013 18:03

I like Ruth.

superbagpuss · 08/08/2013 18:15

Rachel please, for the sake of your daughter

MollyBerry · 10/08/2013 13:59

Does anyone actually know any children called Ruth though?

Do people know children called Ruth? Well a few years ago Elsies and Archies were at least 75 years old or more, and it didn't stop the name coming back.

I like Ruth - I know a number of strong but kind women by this name, so it has good vibes and is a bit more unusual than Rachel.

sonlypuppyfat · 10/08/2013 14:29

Ruth hands down, Rachel will get called Rach ugh

AnathemaDevice · 10/08/2013 14:49

Ruth. DS2 would have been Ruth if he was a girl.

Hooya · 10/08/2013 15:26

Rachel. And I'm a Ruth! I don't hate my name but I think Rachel is nicer.

elQuintoConyo · 10/08/2013 21:35

I'm a Rachel, NEVER Rach, Rachey, Raquel.
DH will call me Rackers if he's being an arse a bit silly. I'm not a fan of the -eal spelling after my Brownie certificate was spelt that way AND they spelt my surname wrongly, too Sad I felt so unimportant and a bit invisible, like I didn't really exist.
I know a Ruth who is about 35, nice woman.
Wasn't Ellen Paige called Ruth in the film Whip It about rollerderby? She was nicknamed Babe Ruthless which is quite cool Smile

rallytog1 · 10/08/2013 22:57

Rachel. It's pretty rare for babies to be called Rachel these days. Although I suspect that may mean it's due a comeback soon.

SleepyPanda · 10/08/2013 23:48

How funny, KnittedWaffle; it appears you are my exact opposite. I clicked on this thread because I am a Rachel who was very almost a Ruth as it was my parents other choice.

I've always said that I'm glad they stuck with their first choice as I'm not keen on Ruth personally. I think it's the whole Roof thing if I'm honest.

I haven't heard of many, if any, baby Rachels or Ruths in recently though so hopefully whichever name you chose OP, your DD won't be one of 3 in a class. I really hated that as a child.

'Rachel?'
'Yes Miss'
'Not you Rachel, the other Rachel!'

Girl in Year 6 at my daughter's school is a Ruth 😊

friendlymum67 · 11/08/2013 00:01

No's meant to be a smiley! Confused

aufaniae · 11/08/2013 00:01

Ruth

Devora · 11/08/2013 00:05

I love them both. My family is full of Ruths, so I wanted to call dd1 Rachel but got voted down Sad. I think neither is particularly fashionable at the moment, but they are lovely.

kiwik, that would be antisemitism, no? So calling your child Rachel would be an act of resistance Smile

skyflyer · 11/08/2013 00:43

I love Rachel, it sounds elegant and strong to me, a friend named Rachel who is just that so that may be why.

Ruth sounds an older persons name.

missnevermind · 11/08/2013 00:52

elQuintoConyo I watched that film last night!

My Mum is a Ruth. DD's middle name is Ruth.

Even though it is Mums name I still think it is a cute little name for a girl.

KittenofDoom · 11/08/2013 00:55

I would choose Rachel every time. To me Ruth sounds very curt. And curiously although its meaning is very well known, it is always the antithesis that comes to mind, ie ruthless.

treaclesoda · 11/08/2013 11:47

its interesting how regional names are within the UK, Rachel is quite a common name for little girls in my area, I know loads of them, which is why I voted for Ruth earlier in this thread. I didn't realise Rachel isn't favoured in other parts of the country.

I have a feeling there are probably a lot of 15 to 18 year old Rachels, as a result of Friends, does that sound like a reasonable assumption?

violator · 11/08/2013 14:07

Rachel. Spelled like that.
Don't know where the "ae" comes from tbh.
