Good names from Literature

DD has a first name that is a character from Little Women (and Family Guy which we didnt realise til well after she was born). Her MN is "in Wonderland".

I read a lot as a child and still do and as well as loving the names, I like the literary connection.

I have no clue of what to name this baby - dont know yet if boy or girl - but part of me is so tempted to carry on the literaey theme.

Can you suggest me a few nice names that are from literature (almost obviously so)?

I have an 11 day old Caspian on my knee just now Smile

If he'd been a DD he'd have been Lyra or Cressida. My middle child, DD has a literary name but from a random fantasy series of books so no one has ever heard of it!

I have a DS called Laurie after Little Women and the wonderful Laurie Lee of course!

I also like:
Silas
Sebastian
Auberon
Gilbert
Oscar

And girls:
Anne
Perdita
Marilla
Iris

Random selection there Smile

Sorensen for a boy from The Changeover (from whence my user name comes)

Sebastian from Brideshead (or the Veronica at the Wells series!)

MsJupiterJones · 11/08/2013 10:25

I also have a Lawrence, was thinking more 'D.H.' or 'of Arabia'.

FromageFrog · 11/08/2013 11:27

Tess is a fantastic name.

MummyBeerest · 11/08/2013 15:05

Love Tess for a girl, and to go with Meg is perfect! And I really like Meg and Matilda together.

I always liked Edwin (Charles Dickens' Edwin Drood) for a boy, or Benjamin (Bunny).

IslaValargeone · 11/08/2013 15:12

Biff
Chip

MrsOgg · 12/08/2013 22:50

But don't tell her you named her after Tess of the d'Urbervilles! She has a horrible, horrible life! So depressing.

PattieOfurniture · 12/08/2013 23:06

Ds2's middle name is Morrie, named after Morrie Schwartz from the book Tuesdays with Morrie. My favourite and most inspirational book of all time.

LeoandBoosmum · 24/08/2013 01:00

Sylvie...some French novel I read years ago.
I like the pseudonyms the Brontes wrote under:
IIRC Charlotte B was Currer Bell,
Emily B was Ellis Bell,
Anne was Acton Bell.
The Bronte brother was called Branwell which is quite nice in its own way.

out2lunch · 24/08/2013 01:02

EnjoyEverySandwich · 24/08/2013 01:02

The name of the little girl in 'To Kill A Mockingbird' was Jean Louise, which I think is lovely. "Scout" was only a nickname, and is a dreadfully ugly name for a child.

EnjoyEverySandwich · 24/08/2013 01:14

Old gimmers like me do not think of Roald Dahl's Matilda, but Hilaire Belloc's.

    Matilda told such Dreadful Lies,
    It made one Gasp and Stretch one's Eyes;
Her Aunt, who, from her Earliest Youth,
Had kept a Strict Regard for Truth,
    Attempted to Believe Matilda:
The effort very nearly killed her,
And would have done so, had not She
    Discovered this Infirmity.
For once, towards the Close of Day,
    Matilda, growing tired of play,
And finding she was left alone,
    Went tiptoe to the Telephone
    And summoned the Immediate Aid
    Of London's Noble Fire-Brigade.
Within an hour the Gallant Band
Were pouring in on every hand,
From Putney, Hackney Downs, and Bow.
With Courage high and Hearts a-glow,
They galloped, roaring through the Town,
    'Matilda's House is Burning Down!'
Inspired by British Cheers and Loud
    Proceeding from the Frenzied Crowd,
They ran their ladders through a score
    Of windows on the Ball Room Floor;
And took Peculiar Pains to Souse
The Pictures up and down the House,
    Until Matilda's Aunt succeeded
    In showing them they were not needed;
And even then she had to pay
To get the Men to go away!

It happened that a few Weeks later
Her Aunt was off to the Theatre
    To see that Interesting Play
    The Second Mrs. Tanqueray.
She had refused to take her Niece
    To hear this Entertaining Piece:
    A Deprivation Just and Wise
To Punish her for Telling Lies.
That Night a Fire did break out--
You should have heard Matilda Shout!
You should have heard her Scream and Bawl,
And throw the window up and call
To People passing in the Street--
    (The rapidly increasing Heat
    Encouraging her to obtain
Their confidence) -- but all in vain!
For every time she shouted 'Fire!'
    They only answered 'Little Liar!'
And therefore when her Aunt returned,
Matilda, and the House, were Burned.
