We also don't worry about who is oldest, I had a C-section and so the difference is only 1min. ILs labour the point that DD1 is a "big sister" and so responsible for her "little" sister. This is not helped by DD2 being increasingly smaller than DD1.

But within our family unit they are the same age. It also bugs me when people say "the twins" or even "the girls" but that's because I've never heard ILs refere to my stepson as "the boy". And yes, I am over thinking that one because I know the PILs don't value girls/women.

They only need to sit together as other siblings

Leo and milo would be awful. Milo and Leon would be ok. But actually something quite contrasting could be great. Sebastian and rafe

I know a Catherine and Elizabeth - in their 30s. Cath and Liz. Seems to work well, I'd follow suit if I had twins. Not matchy, but on the same baby naming theme/ trend.

sparkleshine · 28/07/2013 22:22

At school there were twin boys. Think they were Stephen Michael and Michael Stephen.
I know of an Isla and and Isaac twins. Both lovely names and 'go' but hmm can't quite decide.

QOD · 28/07/2013 22:38

My Ma in law thankfully didnt have twins but had 4 children and named them the equivalent of .....

Patrick
Patricia
Alexandra
Alexander.

I bet twins would have been Paul and Paula

TheDetective · 28/07/2013 23:38

QOD I know a Paula. Her twin is Paul.

It has caused her problems. She told me when she got a CRB check done, her brothers details came up, and it caused no end of issues - as he has a criminal record, and she does not!

SupermansBigRedPants · 28/07/2013 23:51

I know a woman who has dc named Michael, michelle and michaella Shock her husband chose the names.. his name is micky, short for . . . Wink

Names that 'go' are fine, names that rhyme are not Grin

Goooooooooooooooooooooood · 29/07/2013 00:42

I knew ( as in, I actually knew them) a family where the kids were called Paul, Paula and Pauline. They would be in there forties and fifties now.
True fact ( that I keep posting about Grin )

Goooooooooooooooooooooood · 29/07/2013 00:43

Their NOT there. Blush

Oh the shame...

justanuthermanicmumsday · 29/07/2013 01:08

this will make you laugh. In my family it tradition culture whatever nonsense to use alliteration or rhyme twins are not necessary for the recipe lol. so i have cousins these are quite common names called holly Molly dolly i kid you not, they are many years apart in age.

all my bros have the ul sound at the end of their names. Me and sis alliterate and have same vowel sound at the end to make it a bit more similar but thank goodness no rhymes!

all the folks in the same ethnic background as me also have siblings named in a similar fashion.

They will even make names up just to continue the poetic flow lol. so Julie and maybe roolie to match not kidding lol. how about rumi and shumie?
Oh this is cool johnny and ronnie lol
anyone want rhymes i can pluck up many.

Agree letters and phone calls are a prob with same initials, but they're not the end of the world.

If i had twins I'd like to think I'd give them different names, so they felt like they had a very unique identity of their own. From twin stories i gather they often feel pigeonholed as one human being rather than two. Dressed the same, look the same, sound the same. I think its important to help them forge very strong separate identities and names can help with this. Or I may be talking a whole load of tosh who knows?

Despite the above how ridiculous it may sound to us it doesn't matter they're ur children its up to you how you choose the names who cares what ppl like moi think. Choose names that you love, happy searching!

ThePeppermintHippo · 29/07/2013 01:16

I think it's good to use names of a vaguely similar style that do "go" together e.g. Something like Martha and Annabel as twins obviously sounds better than Elizabeth and Chardonnay! But my favourite girls name is Russian and another name I love is welsh, so a bit different in style, but I wouldn't let that stop me using them on twins. I guess I would see them both as classic style though. I agree matching themes, rhyming etc is cheesy and to be avoided!

Also I am an identical twin myself and I am surprised by the idea of concealing which twin is older! I have never heard of anyone doing that and I would find it very weird to not know if my sister was older or younger. Not that it makes a real difference as it is minutes, but I'd just find it strange not to know!

PoppyAmex · 29/07/2013 01:27

Oh dear...

DD has a decidedly Mediterranean/Latin name (from my country) and I'm currently pregnant with a DS who will have a Scottish name (DH is Scottish).

They will be very different names; Latin and Celtic and I'm not sure they'll "complement" each other but they'll mean a lot to both our families.

Alisvolatpropiis · 29/07/2013 01:32

Poppy I wouldn't worry. Whilst it's nice when sibling names compliment each other, at the end of the day all siblings are individuals. Names with meaning is more important than names with a particular theme.

NoComet · 29/07/2013 01:34

Lennox has it exactly

Janet and Peter
Charlotte and Elizabeth
Skye and Tiger
Caleb and Rhiannon all fine

Jane and Esmeralda
James and River
not fine.

Appart from sounding daft, the twin with the intresting name will want the plain one and plain one will feel there parents didn't bother about them.

WafflyVersatile · 29/07/2013 01:43

It might be a bit unfair to call one

Olivia Beatrice Alexandra

and the other

Sharon

so yes they have to 'go'.

blueemerald · 29/07/2013 01:43

Totally agree with name type. I know twins called Sarah and Raine. Bizarre.

Teds77 · 29/07/2013 08:01

I do vaguely agree with the idea that names shouldn't be matchy but being a similar style is good. However we gave our two names that probably are a slightly odd combination but were the names we love. DTS has a classic name but a bit 70s/80s (think Andrew/Peter sort of thing) and DTD has an old lady chic name (think Iris/Violet). I think they work fine together and they are names which we love which is the most important thing.

Actually Peter and Violet or Andrew and Iris would be lovely combinations in my mind so that reassures me that our combo works! Grin

PoppyAmex · 29/07/2013 08:01

Alisvolat thanks, you're very kind and made me feel better about the prospect of people thinking my children's names are bizarre Smile
