Is this a legitimate nickname?

Is Ella a legitimate nickname for Elizabeth? I don't seem to like any others... Or do you think it's a completely different name and would be inappropriate to use it as a nickname for Elizabeth?

Of course it's appropriate- whatever you want is fine.

But bear in mind that you can't control shortenings. You can call her Ella, but what other people call her, and what she calls herself are out of your hands!

TheOneWithTheHair · 26/07/2013 09:55

I think you can use whatever nickname you like. It doesn't have to relate to the given name.

Ds2's nickname has nothing to do with his given name however once his nn is shortened it is also the accepted shortening of his given name. Totally by coincidence.

Onyabike · 26/07/2013 09:56

Ella's definitely not a nickname I would associate with Elizabeth as to me it's a completely different name.

susiedaisy · 26/07/2013 09:57

Personally I see Ella as a stand alone name on its own and wouldn't assume it was short for Elizabeth, but that doesn't stop you using it, both names are lovely, not keen on liz or lizzy though!

Onyabike · 26/07/2013 09:58

Agree with what other posters have said though, you can use whatever nickname you like! Ella's just not a name I would personally associate with Elizabeth...

NoComet · 26/07/2013 10:02

By total coincidence DM and DMIL go/went by the same NN, from a radio show of the 50's not their real name at all.

DDads is utterly unrelated to his name too.

DD2's is in a convoluted way. DD1 is simply shortened.

looki · 26/07/2013 16:34

I know somebody called David who has the nickname Mike (and his middle name is a different name again)!

I wouldn't associate Ella with Eluzabeth personally tbh.

looki · 26/07/2013 16:36

'Oops big fingers on ph I meant Elizabeth!

HorryIsUpduffed · 26/07/2013 16:59

I know someone with an Oliver known as Bobby. Ella is closer than that.

Otherwise, a pretty -bel or -bella name will also give Ella, as would Elinor (etc). I love Annabel.

BNmum · 26/07/2013 19:12

I would associate Ella with Eleanor or Elinor. I would never associate it with Elizabeth

mikkii · 26/07/2013 19:17

I have a Gabriela (Spanish spelling, not a typo!) which is shortened to Ela (said Ella).

You can choose the NN. DH's family almost never use full names so we chose names and NN and issued our edicts at birth (except for DD2 whose NN is longer than her name.......) Grin

squeak2392 · 26/07/2013 21:09

It's certainly not an established nn for Elizabeth, but why not? Elizabeth begins with El - I wouldn't be surprised to find an Elizabeth nn Ellie (although it would be unusual), so I see nothing stopping you from calling her Ella.

Although Ella is a lovely name of its own accord :)

MaryBateman · 26/07/2013 21:13

Not that I know of. My GM's sister was registered/baptised as Ella in 1918.

Mollie272 · 26/07/2013 23:17

I know 2 Ellas - one is just simply Ella, the other is Miriella. I have an Elizabeth (known always as Lizzy) but I've never considered Ella as a nickname. I think if I was going to use it, I'd have it as a stand alone name - or as a nn for Gabriella or Isabella or something similar.

Alisvolatpropiis · 27/07/2013 01:02

Nicknames are just that.

They can be whatever you want.

deleted203 · 27/07/2013 01:16

Does it need to be legitimate? nn are whatever you fancy. (I have a child called 'Toad' for what it's worth. It bears no resemblance to his official Christian name).

Gailus · 27/07/2013 15:52

My niece is 'Elizabeth' but is called Ellie, Ella, and often Belle. I also have friends who are known as Liz, Beth, and Eliza....although full name is Elizabeth....your daughter, your choice. :-)

TheCatIsUpTheDuff · 28/07/2013 21:12

I studied with an Elizabeth known as Ellie, but ultimately it's your daughter, her choice. If she wants to be Lizzy when she's 13, there won't be a lot you can do about it.
