Unusual but too out there boys name?

My husband is a huge Inspector Morse fan and I love names that are creative, unique but have a classic feel to them, so nothing too boho or of the moment. We've come up with Endeavour Valentine... Slightly worried it'll be Dev for short which makes me think of that awful bloke in Corrie!

What do you think? Too bonkers for boy?!

The teasing isn't caused by the name, it's caused by your arsehole kids who think a different name deserves teasing.

Onesleeptillwembley · 25/07/2013 00:09

Oh get real. No matter how (hopefully) most people bring up their children there will always be a significant amount if people who bring up their children to tease.

steppemum · 25/07/2013 00:20

the problem with Endeavour is that it is too long for people to use the whole name, and there is no nice shortening of it.

Valentine is definitely for me a female name. I know officially unisex but feels female to me. Valentino for a boy.

And Morse hated it, never used it, and never told anyone it. Seems that may be how you ds feels?

steppemum · 25/07/2013 00:22

as to teasing - that really depends where you are. In some areas Endeavour would be sensible compared to all the other names in the school. No-one gets teased for their name because everyone has unusual names.

In other areas it would stand out like a sore thumb

notanyanymore · 25/07/2013 00:24

I like Endeavour, its a lovely name.

notanyanymore · 25/07/2013 00:28

I think its much nicer then dexter, which is like an 'unusual safe' name, that's not that unusual and actually just safe.

SirBoobAlot · 25/07/2013 00:28

Morse never told anyone his name, because it was ridiculous. If you're true Morse fans, then surely you won't lumber your child with something that even the character you're naming him after detested?

nooka · 25/07/2013 06:47

Endeavour is pretty awful and coupled with Valentine is verging on cruel. I have an unusual name which I really like, and generally get very positive comments about but it is still a nuisance at times. Can you really imagine introducing yourself as Endeavour? Really? And then think about the type of response you might be likely to receive, I would imagine from disbelief to sniggers. People who make the connection to Inspector Morse will think you are bonkers because the whole point is that he hated his name so much he never ever used it. Possibly because there are no 'normal' shortenings you can get out of it (my name can be shortened to a very common 70's name if I want to blend in).

I think it's a bit much even for a middle name to be honest, and Im not at all sure that Valentine is much better.

curlew · 25/07/2013 07:15

It's not the teasing or the bullying. That might happen, but the only children I have ever heard of being teased or bullied are those names that with a little imagination- or even with none can be tuned into something scatological or sexual.

It's having to explain it every single time you give your name for the rest of your life. It's boring. It means you can never sink into the background (and believe it or not, sometimes everyone wants to sometimes). My dd has a friend whose birth name was Seven. She got so fed up of saying "Seven. Yes it is unusual - no, the number, not the river. It was my dad's lucky number. Yes, I am glad his lucky number wasn't a hundred and fourty three..." that when she was in year 6 she insisted on changing it to go up to Secondary school with....

IWipeArses · 25/07/2013 08:21

I have a very normal name, not especially common when I was a child, but it was certainly used to taunt me. I knew a Dylan who got teased. No one else had unusual names I think, but everybody got teased for something.

I knew a kid later called Saxon. I imagine he got teased. He also had lovely long blond hair, he probably got teased for that too. He came across as someone who was going to do well for himself, unlike the majority of Thomas' who made up the rest of his class.

SelectAUserName · 25/07/2013 09:28

I agree that Endeavour is a bit too "out there" but I think Dexter Valentine sounds smashing! It's the sort of name I imagine a secret agent or a jazz musician using - cool and quirky but not outrageous.

curlew · 25/07/2013 09:30

I know it's bad form to say that a post is stupid- but dear god, that's a stupid post!

pumpkinsweetie · 25/07/2013 09:34

Dexter is much better, and a rather nice nameSmile

IWipeArses · 25/07/2013 10:02

Why stupid, just an actual experience of kids with unusual names. He was a well-mannered talented and hard-working young man. I remember him because he had an unusual name though, which will probably serve him well.

Theas18 · 25/07/2013 10:24

I'm lovingendeavour but huge morse fan here too.

curlew · 25/07/2013 10:27

Well, I would assume that anyone who called their child Endeavour had never seen an episode of Morse and never read any of the books. BECAUSE HE HATED THE NAME!

IWipeArses · 25/07/2013 10:28

He was a character flawed in many ways.

curlew · 25/07/2013 10:28

What about "unlike the majority of Thomas'................"

Whiteroom82 · 25/07/2013 10:35

He may hate the name, but he's fictional! It was the name I liked, not the hope he was going up turn into a difficult, troubled and reclusive detective! However, if he did, we'd support him anyway!

There were a load of Thomases in his class who I vaguely remember as being average. I have no recollection what at least three of them looked like. I'm sure most of them are doing well for themselves, but they didn't stick in my mind, and in a harsh industry based on networking and personality, that won't have done them any favours.

curlew · 25/07/2013 10:40

Words fail me......

IWipeArses · 25/07/2013 10:46

It may be true that some children don't like their unusual names, it's also true that they may actually benefit from standing out from the crowd.
Choose a name because you like it.
My kids don't have unusual names, but that wasn't the reason we chose them.

WafflyVersatile · 25/07/2013 11:37

Dexter Valentine is a dude.

IWipeArses · 25/07/2013 11:59

I do like Dexter Valentine actually. I just love Valentine, always have. Grin

CajaDeLaMemoria · 25/07/2013 12:03

I think the real issue is that, as has already been said, The Endeavour was a very famous ship.

Even if the kid's don't know about it initially, they'll learn about it at school.

Adults will already think it's a bit boat-y.
