Is Lily to popular?

I have always loved the name Lily/Lilly and thought it would definately be the name I'd pick if I had a girl but now that I'm pg I'm wondering if it's too popular?

We don't know the sex of our baby but everytime someone asks what names I like and I say Lily it seems everyone know someone who had a little girl called Lily.

I also like Tilly and Lottie I'm not sure how popular they are.

Any thoughts?

I know five or six Lillies/Lilys/Lillys, so I would say it's fairly popular at the moment.

I took Lillian off my list as was worried as well. However, if you truely love it, you should use that name.

I love Tilly as a nickname but Matilda isn't my kind of name, though it's lovely for other people.

I love Lottie, it's really cute. If my brother in law didn't name his daughter Charlotte, a little Lottie would be on my list. :)

Lily is very popular, over-used in fact, but if you love it, that shouldn't matter.

You obviously like popular names, as I lump all the Lily, Tilly, Milly names in together. And Lottie is very much of that ilk.

They're nice enough names, but every other little girl has one of them, so for that reason that tend to lose something. They will also date; being so popular, they will be associated with this era.

It's a beautiful name, so popular for good reason, but there are five in my DD's year at school. I imagine its quite similar in a lot of places.

squoosh · 23/07/2013 10:39

It's really, really popular. If you love it you should just use it, you might not come across any in your direct circles.

But they're definitely out there. It's this generation's Claire/Louise.

Lily is a lovely name. I don't know any young Lilys.

I don't like Lottie or Tilly, they're nicknames and more twee.

It was the number 3 name in 2011. The 2012 list should be published next month.

I really like it, but then again, my 3 DSs have names that are now in the top 10! (I'm sure they weren't so popular when I named them.)

I wouldn't let the popularity of a name be the reason not to choose it. If you love it, you should go for it! You may regret it otherwise. Whatever name you choose, there may always be more than one of them in a class. I fact, in my DC classes, it has ironically been the case that the "less" popular names seem to be duplicated, so you may be really fed up to choose a less popular name that you like less, only to discover that there are more than one of them in the class anyway!

What about Lilia? Nearly Lily but a bit different...

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 23/07/2013 12:25

Yes, but the title was 'Is Lily too popular?'

mrstowers · 23/07/2013 12:50

Yes it is. If you use it I think you will have to bear in mind that when your child is at school they will never be known as just Lily, it will always be Lily Smith or Lily Jones etc

Thewhingingdefective · 23/07/2013 12:55

I have a Lily (aged 7) and there is one other in her year at school. There was also another in Year 6 - who has now obviously moved up to secondary school. So 2 or 3 in a school of 400. Not that common where I live. Evie is much more common.
