Met an Alyas yesterday. Always thought it was possibly an Asian name, but he said it's Welsh origin. Anyone else heard of it? It's certainly unusual, he said he was always the only one in his class! He pronounced it Ail-ias.

Did he spell it out for you or could it be Elias? As a Welsh speaker, I pronounce Elias as Ehl-ayas whereas the English prn. is more Eel-eye-as.

I know a newborn Elias. Is this it?

trapezegirl · 15/07/2013 00:42

I would think Elias as well. I love that name.

No, he gave me his business card! Definitely Alyas. He said his mum picked it!

That's an awful spelling - I would use Elias if you like the name.

Alys is a Welsh girls name. Form of Alice.

Never seen Alyas before. Ever. It is apparently an Islamic name (according to baby name sites)

The Arabic version of Elias is Ilyas and I have a seen it spelt as Alyas too. It is the name of the name of the prophet Ilyas/Elias .

ClaraOswald · 16/07/2013 09:21

It's definitely not Welsh!

Clawdy · 16/07/2013 21:23

That's what I thought...

Never heard of this name before. My first thought on seeing the thread title was that this was an alternative spelling of Alice.
