How would you pronounce Talia?

I'm not choosing a name, just having a healthy debate with a friend. Around here, I've only heard of it was Tal-ee-uh but she says she'd say is as Tar-LEE-uh.

Might depend on local accents, but around here it would be ta-lee-uh

Happymum22 · 08/07/2013 19:06

Tal-ee-ah, I think like surf25!

Downfall · 08/07/2013 19:08

Tar-lee-ah

colleysmill · 08/07/2013 19:09

This is a relative of mine's name. They pronounce it Tar le ah. They do live in the states if that has any bearing on it?

Smerlin · 08/07/2013 19:11

Tar-lee-ah- short for Natalia no?

VelvetStrider · 08/07/2013 19:13

Tal-ee-er

Tar-lee-er is spelt Thalia.

here, Talia is a common Jewish girl's name and is always pronounced Tal-ee-uh. I have a cousin Thalia - TAR-lee-uh.

One of the DDs is at school with a Tahlia, pronounced Ta-lee-ah. I would assume Talia would be pronounced the same. Confused by the 'r's, is that like when people say draw-ring instead of drawing?

Wbdn28 · 08/07/2013 19:55

TALL-ya

Like the last two syllables of Na-TAL-ia.

Along similar lines, for Tania I'd say TAN-ya rather than TARN-ya which sounds a bit affected/contrived.

Any language experts here? I'd assumed it was an Italian/Spanish/Latin name with a short "a" sound rather than "ah"?

LittleSporksBigSpork · 08/07/2013 19:59

In English, Ta-lee-ah would be most likely, but in Hebrew the accent is typically on the second or last syllable and ta-LEE-ah would be most likely (and more likely to be written as Talya.

Thalia is Greek and not related linguistically to Talia.

Weegiemum · 08/07/2013 20:00

One of my dd2s best friends is Talia. Pronounced Taa-lee-ah.

Alisvolatpropiis · 08/07/2013 23:18

I knew one who said it more like Tal-ya.

I'd say Tall-ee-ah generally speaking though.

lessonsintightropes · 09/07/2013 00:32

Tar-lee-ah I think.

JeanPaget · 09/07/2013 01:04

Tal-lee-a, but I think if I was saying it everyday I'd come to say it more like Tal-ya, iyswim.

ShaggingZumbaStylee · 09/07/2013 02:40

Tal-ee-ah

OrangeLily · 09/07/2013 02:47

Tal yah like the end of Natalia - nat tal yah

rundontwalk · 09/07/2013 02:54

Ta-lee-ah like the end of Natalia for me!

Choccyhobnob · 09/07/2013 10:28

Probably Taa lee uh but would doubt myself and feel perfectly happy if I was then told it was Ta lee uh.

Pixieonthemoor · 09/07/2013 17:16

Oops I always thought the first syllable was like 'tail' so tail-lee-uh Blush

MissingMyMarbles · 09/07/2013 19:04

I'd say 'Tal ya'
If it was spelt Tahlia then I'd say 'Tarl yuh'
No idea why I'd differentiate the end syllable Hmm

RaRaZ · 11/07/2013 02:33

Tarl-yuh

SupermansBigRedPants · 11/07/2013 03:06

You're all pronouncing it wrong to me!

In my accent it's ta-lay-ah. Everyone and their wife says it that way.

JeanPaget · 11/07/2013 03:18

Interesting Supermans, do you mean you'd emphasise the middle syllable, like Ta-LAY-ah?

I'm always concerned that I'm going through life making an arse of myself with my pronunciation...

SupermansBigRedPants · 11/07/2013 07:06

No, no emphasis on lay if anything the opposite. Trying to think of the right way to write it down. . Like tally - ah so more exaggeration on the'ta' part but not much Confused I'm useless at descriptions Blush
