I really like it. Would she normally be known at Millie? I think only choose it if you are prepared for people to automatically shorten it... As they will whether you like it or not!

rockybalboa · 06/07/2013 21:09

Lovely.

rob99 · 06/07/2013 21:27

The problem with quite unusual names is this......I don't want to sound cruel and shallow but, if your daughter turns out to be pretty, slim, smart and popular, the name Millicent will become synonymous with all that is good. If she turns out another way, the name Millicent will make her stand out when she would want to blend in. I know a Victoria who was unattractive in many ways so I've never liked the name but I went to school with a Meryl who was an absolute stunner AND very clever so the mention of her name was always on the cool side.

Will always aways be a witches name for me. - sleeping beauty I think.

UpTheFRIGGinDuff · 06/07/2013 22:13

I like Millicent.
I don't like Millie though...

efffy · 06/07/2013 22:37

I have a baby Millicent, I've had so many lovely comments on it. It does have a tendency to be shortened to Millie though.

The only ever negative comment was something along the lines of

'Why give a baby such a grown up name, and how will she ever spell it at playgroup'

I responded pointing out they are adults far longer than they are young children. Grin

outoffuel · 06/07/2013 22:43

It sounds like the word militant to me which puts me off the name. Millie is a great name though!

YoungBritishPissArtist · 06/07/2013 22:45

Love it! Also love Mildred Blush

Not so keen on Milly/Millie, but would be a good nn for when she is young.

MyBoysAreFab · 06/07/2013 22:48

I love it! But then I also love Mildred and Ethel.

Queazy · 06/07/2013 22:51

I prefer just the nn Millie x

TiredyCustards · 06/07/2013 22:53

Makes me think militant, incandescent (with rage), malevolent.

Not a nice name.

PicardyThird · 06/07/2013 23:04

I love it. It would be right up there on my hypothetical girls' list if the pronunciation wouldn't be mangled in the country I live in.

RaRaZ · 07/07/2013 12:21

Agree with the above, millipede...

mewkins · 09/07/2013 22:17

Yes lovely!

AllegraLilac · 11/07/2013 01:28

Millicent Bullstrode. Makes me think of bulky women. Same feel as Agnes/Senga in my book. Fishwives.

Alisvolatpropiis · 11/07/2013 20:25

I don't like it.

CPtart · 11/07/2013 20:33

Not a nice name. Neither is Millie.

Branleuse · 11/07/2013 20:37

i dont like it at all.

tammytwigg · 11/07/2013 20:38

I've got a Millie and I love it , can't imagine her being a Millicent Though .

TalkativeJim · 12/07/2013 00:12

Don't like at all. Millie is ok, but there are nicer ways to get to it!

It's very harsh and hard and sounds like a thing not a name. And it sort of means 'thousand hundred' which seems really strange - what's the actual etymology?

WidowWadman · 12/07/2013 07:17

It's an anglicisation of the Norman name Melisande, which in turn means strength/work.

Linguaphile · 12/07/2013 07:47

Like it, though it does make me think of Malificent from Sleeping Beauty.

TalkativeJim · 12/07/2013 10:26

Oh thanks Widow, that makes sense.

Like Melisande - and love Melissa.

Choccyhobnob · 12/07/2013 14:22

Exactly was Mortified said, Millicent Bulstrode and Maleficant from sleeping beauty!

Sorry!
