How do you manage to jointly choose a name when your OH has such crap taste in names??!

**Disclaimer - I apologise if you have a child with one of these names!! I'm not trying to be nasty!

I thought he was joking at first with some of them, but it's becoming apparent he just has a ... "strange" taste in names - it's like he thinks the baby will be popping out middle-aged...!

Rita?
Lorraine?
Malcolm?
Reginald?
Geoffrey?
Ruebens?

He has come up with a couple I do like, but he doesn't move in the same circles as I do with lots of friends with little children, and doesn't believe me that there will be at least 5 of each Alfie, Lily, Evie etc in our child's class and I don't want that.

How did you work it out with your partner?

Oh, your list did make me chuckle... DH and I are calling our bump "Malcolm" but we aren't actually naming baby that!

We decided on a boy name very amicably, but the girl's name is proving trickier. I WILL win this one though. He thinks my choices are too "posh". I don't.

Perhaps you could suggest spending time around children (for practice!) then he'd realise.... Or maybe not.

MikeLitoris · 03/07/2013 20:08

We had this problem with dd2.

Dd has interesting taste in names.

I told him the name that was top of my list and then banned all talk of names until after the birth.

When he saw me having proper contractions he told me I could have the name.

I wanted Eliza. He wanted Nevaeh.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 03/07/2013 20:12

I'm not proud of this, but I did take advantage of that hormonally-charged moment when you've just pushed a baby out out your fanjo in the middle of the living room floor and announce that the baby was called X.

Both times... Blush

RhinestoneCowgirl · 03/07/2013 20:14

And we had discussed names (at length) beforehand, it was just that DH was playing extremely safe and just needed nudging towards our childrens perfectly normal but a bit more interesting names...

ArabellaBeaumaris · 03/07/2013 20:15

TSC that after Girls Aloud by any chance? Grin

Have you done going through a baby name book & each marking ones you like? Your list is the handful of names you both like!

I never could have a sensible conversation about it. I showed DH my list, he vetoed most of them, and when DS1 was born I said 'It's x or y' and he picked one. With DS2 I did something similar but in the end we both had a favourite combination.

BeyonceCastle · 03/07/2013 20:21

Reuben is okay - you yourself could shorten it to ben
Verity is vair nice/unique - he could shorten it to Rita

YokoUhOh · 03/07/2013 20:23

www.namedtogether.co.uk

It'll throw up the Top 500 names no Lorraine, then and both you and DH choose your favourites separately. It then cross-references your lists and throws up the ones you both like :)

BeyonceCastle · 03/07/2013 20:23

Kim Deal is an excellent reason Wink
but i am biased as my dds middle name is Frances after Black Francis...

MikeLitoris · 03/07/2013 20:23

Even though dp had agreed to my name before dd was born I still made a huge point of loudly announcing her name several times, just incase Grin

YokoUhOh · 03/07/2013 20:25

Overuse of the words 'throw up' in that post, apologies to anyone in the early stages of pregnancy :)

SixPackWellies · 03/07/2013 20:59

we could never agree at all, so in the end we just went with the name of precious family members that we wished to honour.

And it worked. :)

DH was very keen on a name for DC1 that would have rhymed dreadfully. Think 'Jason Mason' that sort of thing.

he still cannot see anything wrong with it.

Thank heavens we both had lovely GPs and Aunts/Uncles we could pillage from!

Love Reuben and Reginald.

CinnabarRed · 03/07/2013 21:43

Just call a girl Pixie, and the TSC and her DH could both be happy without resorting to Kim.

CinnabarRed · 03/07/2013 21:43

I cried when The Pixies split...

Tis possible that there's only me, you and Beyonce left now (and that's not a phrase I ever thought I'd need to type).
