Compromising, agreeing to disagree or just putting my foot down!?

DD2 has arrived and DP has some crazy ideas about what to name her. I keep thinking "Do I know this man?" He's besotted and he cannot, I suspect, see past the peachy baby to the 40 year old woman who will have to live with the name she is given.

Without spilling the beans on the preferred name (with a string of other similar names up his sleeve), can anyone come to my aid with some names which I could counter with, which still have some similar sounds, please. I so don't want to dismiss them outright, but honestly, he's even making stuff up!

So, he's wanting a lovely prominent round 'o' sound, he's into 'mmmm', a nice 'l' and a lovely smily 'e' as in 'eh' as opposed to 'ee'. I think I have heard every combination of these sounds now, in real as well as imagined names, and feel like I need to meet his enthusiasm with something of my own while biding my time until he comes around to the idea of Lucy Grin .

And if anyone has any ideas for tactfully and kindly saying "absolutely no way, this is our child we're talking about, FFS!" then please share!

Isobel? It's Bel-ize rearranged..

If he's just going to come up with names that are worse than Melody then taking one name off his list isn't going to work. Maybe he's so keen on Melody he suggests names even more ridiculous in hopes of wearing you down?

rockybalboa · 05/07/2013 20:45

Elodie would work as a compromise surely?

jalapeno · 06/07/2013 06:43

How about Caroline? Has the "o" sound and is a lovely name with lovely nn Carrie. You sound like you have similar tastes to me so how about:

Agatha
Agnes
Fenella
Penelope
Imelda
Matilda
Octavia
Paula
Pamela
Susanna

I don't think melody is a cutesy name, I think it's lovely. Elodie is a good compromise from there.

Murtette · 06/07/2013 20:47

But every 5th child is called Elodie at the moment. I know three born this year. And three born in the two years before that. I don't mind the name but, OP, if you go for it be aware that its becoming very popular.

Romilly?

FetaCheeny · 07/07/2013 10:39

Oh see I think Melody is a lovely name. I went to college with one and always thought how lovely it was. I also met one whilst travelling who went by Melo, which was really cool, and it suited her perfectly (she was a tad hippy). Belle just as girly/cutesy to me as all I think of us Disney princess.... I do like both though. Sorry that wasn't helpful Grin

I quite like melody. I know one around the same age as DD. agree it is a bit too cutesy for a grown woman, however then it could be shortened to Mel, there's loads of grown Mels about!

formicadinosaur · 07/07/2013 17:12

Elodie - it's French

Merryn? Sweet on a baby but I can absolutely see it on a judge.

I have an Ellen so obviously that's my favourite from your list Smile But I guess you're not going to win DH round to those.

Or maybe you will Grin
