Harris for a multi-cultural family in Scotland?

As in title, really.

DH is Scottish, I'm from Southern Europe and we have a DD called Maria Francesca.

I really like the name Harris, but worried it will get constantly confused with Harry (and there's also the issue my family will have pronouncing the "H" as we don't have that sound in our language).

Feedback and suggestions please?

It's really not a nice 'name', unless used as a surname.

Harris is fine. Goes well with Maria.

In my opinion it sounds different enough from Harry.

What does it sound like in your language? Arris?

Love, love, love the name Harris and is on our list. This baby will be half Scottish too and we'd like to use a Scottish name.

We also love Lewis

I think the name is fine, but would be concerned about your side of the family's pronounciation. I have a Greek friend named Aris, which I assume Harris may sound like in their accent? Would it be like your son has 2 different names?

Lewis is nicer and translates easier to Italian

PoppyAmex · 01/07/2013 14:07

Yes, everyone in my country would pronounce it "Arris" but we're thinking of a potential Latin middle name too.

I guess I'd love to hear what kind of cultural/social references this name suggests to you because I'm not originally from the UK so it's hard for me.

Lewis is nice but out of the question for us; it sounds exactly like Luis/Louis which is a "Keith" type of name in my country.

Harris is lovely and I've seen another multicultural family use it and it really works Smile

Would Ari be a better choice? Or would that be too similar to Maria?

Aris wouldn't be too different in my opinion, similar to people dropping the h in Holly/ Harry.

I think Harris is quite similar to names likes Spencer and mason. A popular trend of using surnames as first names.

I think it would fit in very well with current name choices.

Also it is not too popular or too unusual :)

I really like Harris, it's on my list for a boy (if I have anymore). It is a nice name.

I know a few young Harris' in Scotland.

All the island names are quite trendy at the moment.
