I love the name Harriet but my surname also ends in a 't' (two syllables, ending in 'tt'). I quite like the strength of the names together but not sure if it sounds too similar. What do people think? Would really appreciate thoughts as am not sure if I need to give this name up!

Hmm I expected to say no, but when I insert an imaginary surname I a tually like it! Really depends on exactly what your surname is though, eg Harriet Walcott sounds really nice, but Harriet Dermott sounds too 'clipped'. I love the name Harriet.

I have an -ah/er ending surname and had the same issue. No Hannahs here! Although I'm struggling to find a surname with a tt ending that doesn't go with Harriet. Unless it starts with an H - Harriet Hunt is a bit blunt.

Our surname ends ley and both kids are known by their nicknames ending with the same sound. Doesn't bother me and nobody else has ever commented.

LaydeeC · 30/06/2013 15:33

my kids both have names that end in an ee sound and our surname ends in an ee sound also (although none of the names are actually ee ending names!)
as an example josie willoughby (not our name!)
not a problem and no-one has ever commented on it

Without knowing what your surname is, I'd guess it probably does sound rather matchy.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 30/06/2013 19:30

Two syllables would be fine imo, just suppose it was Harriet Beckett, that would sound okay to me.

If you later shorten Harriet to Hattie, that would be even less of a problem.

Sydney78 · 24/09/2013 13:34

Thanks heaps. Can't stop thinking about this name and really like hattie for a nn. Your comments might just help me pursuade husband!

Other names on the short list are Edith and Adelaide.

At least, they are the names on my short list..,

I think it really depends on the ''tt' surname, Harriett Walcott sounds ok, Harriett Everett sounds really silly.

moominsville · 24/09/2013 17:48

This is the same situation I was in four years ago. I loved the name Harriet but surname ends in tt. So I didn't use it and have hugely regretted it ever since. It actually sounds fine with our surname but I overthought it at the time.

Go for it.

MERLYPUSS · 25/09/2013 13:01

Unless you surname is Marriott, I would say it's ok.

FobblyWoof · 25/09/2013 13:51

I think as long as it doesn't make them completely rhyme (eg Juliet Capulet- Shakespeare, what were you thinking?) then it's fine Smile

cupcakeicing · 25/09/2013 13:55

My DS has first name and surname ending in same sound. Like other posters as long as not rhyming then no problem.
Harriet is a really lovely name.

Michellephant · 25/09/2013 14:12

Harriet Barrett wouldn't sound too good either. I think it depends on what sounds are in the surname.

hatsybatsy · 25/09/2013 14:33

tricky to know without the detail BUT we ruled out Annabel as we have a surname ending in "ell" and it sounded daft..... only you know.
