Girls names - quirky yet classic but not too "try-hard"?

Baby girl due in September. Initially I wanted names like Francesca, Tabitha, Theodora, Cecilia... I love them all but DH ruled them all out because they sound "too fussy".

Our shortlist now looks like this:

Etta, Nancy, Pearl - what else might I like?

Surname begins with R.

Thanks ninah - I know it seems like I'm making my life harder by adding to our shortlist but I want to be sure I'm not forgetting any brilliant names that I will regret not choosing! There's not many that are coming close to our top three which I guess is a good sign :)

I like pearl and etta :)

In south London will the pronunciation of etta with the -tt- sound be a problem for you?

southlondongirlie · 30/06/2013 00:20

Funnily enough, i did another post about that last week as I was worried about the same thing - quick poll among friends and my family suggested that most would still pronounce the "t" sound rather than replacing it with glottal stop - i think because it's the main part of the name. I think there'll always be people who will say it with the glottal stop though which I think would really bug me - trying to weigh up whether I can get over that as I love the name so much!

Are you married to my husband? ;-) I've suggested Francesca and Tabitha to my husband and he's discounted both due to them being too fussy ;-)

I just asked my ds, who is fluent in estuarine chav, and he said she would be "E'er" at his school. He pointed out that "letter" is "le'er" .

Etta no, unless she grows up to be a Basque separatist, then it'll be quite handy.
My DM's name is Nancy, she's aaaaaaalways hated it.
Pearl is gorgeous.

I'm crap at suggesting names, just thought I'd chip in with my tuppence worth.

Of your list OP I like Pearl.

Maybe DH could be persuaded re Tabitha, mine was, it is such a fantastic name.
