Does Edgar automatically = Ed?

Just that really. Not at all keen on having a child called Ed (based on someone I know who is a massive twat) but do we think that in This Life stylee it would be abbreviated to Egg by his peers instead of Ed?

I have an Edgar. He is just Edgar. But he is only little so no chance for peers to nickname yet. I think Ed might be inevitable - basically you have to be prepared for any potential nickname but then you can't prepare for everything - I hadn't thought of Egg!

I think Ed is inevitable.

Ed translates much better as a nickname for a grown man than Egg does.

bulletwithbutterflywings · 25/06/2013 16:56

Yes, Edgar will always be shortened to Ed. Egg is less obvious but might happen.

DH is a different Ed name (not Edward though) and he's a Ted rather than an Ed.

I think if you start calling him a nickname - be it Ed, Ted, Ned or Egg (or even Ee or Gar or something completely different like Bear or Fox or whatever) then others will follow on from that so that by the time he gets to school if he already has a nickname that isn't Ed they are unlikely to start calling him Ed (and he's unlikely to be used to answering to it so won't which will soon stop people using it!)

I actually quite like Egg as a nickname. Think it's a bit different from a boring Ed!

I love the name Edgar. If I had one I wouldn't shorten it.

My friends little boy is an Edgar and goes by Ted.

commsgirl · 26/06/2013 13:44

My grandad was an Edgar, major soft spot for that name! He went by Ted or Eddy. Definitely doesn't always have to mean Ed!

playftseforme · 26/06/2013 13:48

my dad was known as Eggie!

UpTheFRIGGinDuff · 26/06/2013 13:55

Love Edgar...not keen on Ed,I like the suggestions of Ned and Ted.

My GD was an Edward, known always as Teddy-could work for Edgar to...following from that, you could even get Bear...

Ed will be inevitable. And it's certainly a million times better than Egg!

Egg?

If I met an Egg I'd think he was a 'you don't have to be crazy to work here, but it helps. Ho, ho, ho' type 'japester'.

What about Ned or Ted?

badtime · 28/06/2013 13:02

I have med Edgars and Edmunds who are Edgar and Edmund, so I don't think Ed is inevitable.

My first thought was Ned as an alternative, as I don't like Ted. I'm very nerdy, so I would think Egg was really Aegon.
