I thought of this name today as I have only met 2 before, both would be in their teens-late 20s today.
I think the nicknames Tash, Tasha would be quite sweet.
What do you think of it?

I love it as a name. It's a classic.

squoosh · 25/06/2013 12:21

I think it's lovely.

Littlecherublegs · 25/06/2013 12:23

I think it's lovely too!

SleepyCatOnTheMat · 25/06/2013 13:19

I really like the name Natasha. To me it is a classic (I believe it's the name of the heroine in War and Peace, though I've not read that), but I have read comments on baby naming forums like this intimating it's a bit 80s. That said, it was good enough for Michelle Obama - a stylish lady - and it's on my shortlist too.

DramaAlpaca · 25/06/2013 13:26

It's lovely.

It's Russian, and I think in Russia it's often used as a nickname for girls with the name Natalia, rather than a name in its own right. I'm happy to be corrected on that if I'm wrong Smile.

I think both Natasha & Natalia are beautiful names (but a little bit frilly for my own taste!)

telsa · 25/06/2013 14:06

Beautiful. traditionally given to girls born around Christmas apparently as it comes from Natalia, from Dies Natalies, meaning "Natal Day" or "Birthday" in reference to the traditional birth of Jesus.

DIYapprentice · 25/06/2013 14:11

It is definitely the diminutive form of Natalia (or Natalie), so a child or a close friend would be called Natasha, and the formal name would be Natalia - so to me they seem like the same name. Natalia's name day is September 8.

bugsybill · 25/06/2013 14:16

I find it hard to find girl names i like, but I really like this and I hadn't thought of it before, it just popped into my head.

sleepycat it does feel a little 80s but I can't put my finger on why, as it wasn't overly popular then, or was it?

That is interesting that it is from Natalia/Natalie, as seems like a full name in its own right.

my dd2 is Natasha, its a lovely name! she gets called Tash or Tasha.

squoosh · 25/06/2013 14:21

Maybe it feels a tad 80s (not to me though) because that's when people in the West started using it. Maybe it was v popular in America.

I think it sounds quite grown up and elegant, and Tash has a lovely playful sound without being too frilly or twee.

DIYapprentice · 25/06/2013 14:21

That's because Russian diminutive names usually do sound like full names in their own right, unlike the shortened nicknames of other cultures - and in plays and stories you will often hear the diminutive form, because it is used by family members and friends of the character.

Eg:
Lubov - Luba
Galina - Galya (Gail)
Irena - Irene
Svetlana - Sveta
Tatiana - Tania
Nadezda - Nadia

There are occasional names that don't have diminutive forms like:

Nina
Vera

Elquota · 25/06/2013 14:23

It's OK, but I prefer Natalie (it's less sneezy!)

sundanceclaire · 25/06/2013 15:00

It's lovely

neolara · 25/06/2013 15:02

I have a Natasha (Tashie). She's 3. I know of one other Natasha who is a similar age. Great name.

Turniptwirl · 25/06/2013 17:14

I'm ploughing through an wnhlish translation of The Brothers Fyodorovitch as the moment and the Russian nicknames are confusing at first! Most of the time it uses the diminutive which to my English self sounds like a valid name in itself. Then in another situation it's the full name and takes me half a paragraph to figure out who it is!

Erm, but yes Natasha is a lovely name. Although more common in the 80s not so dated as Charlene etc

darlingdds2 · 25/06/2013 21:00

Natasha is a really beautiful name, a classic. Much nicer than Natalia - that sounds like the Italian airline!

Sanjifair · 25/06/2013 21:39

I really like the name. Thinking about it myself.

Ham69 · 25/06/2013 22:15

I'm quite surprised at how positive the reactions are. I must admit I do think it's rather dated, along with Natalie, and would be a little concerned about the 'Tash' nn incase they turned out to have excessive facial hair. Though I suppose there are treatments that can be done for that.

Love it - and I don't say that often about names.

teatimesthree · 25/06/2013 22:23

I love it.

MarthasHarbour · 25/06/2013 22:23

I am going against the tide here and saying I dont like it

I work with a Natasha who likes to be called Tasha, fair enough, however i grew up with the Viz comic and there was an unsavoury character called Tasha Slappa, i cant get it out of my head and have to call her by her full name. (Obviously i have never told her this Wink )

But then i am clearly in the minority as you have a wealth of people here saying it is lovely. Smile

it-just always makes me think of Viz

jessjessjess · 27/06/2013 08:08

I love it, but it's a little bit dated now.

FetaCheeny · 27/06/2013 08:26

I'm going against the grain here it seems, but really dislike it. Don't like Tash as a nickname and think it sounds very harsh, I don't like Sacha either so i think its the 'asha' sound that is displeasing to my ear. At least she won't be ten a penny though.

DonDrapersAltrEgoBigglesDraper · 27/06/2013 08:52

I like it, though probably wouldn't choose it myself.

It is a nice name, though.

I know (of) an Australian Natasha who goes by Tash, and I have to admit, it does make me think of facial plumage.
