Rafferty vs. Jago

A brother for Wilf(red) is due in a few weeks and I cannot decide. Our surname begins with R.

I've loved Rafferty throughout but DH seems keener on Jago. I loathe nn Jay (sorry if this offends anyone) and am worried it'll get shortened.

I have Cornish roots and so the family will love Jago. I just think that Wilf and Raffy go beautifully together!

Sorry, I have posted before but we're now down to final two I need some objectivity!

Sorry I'm with your DH.

Rafferty is not particularly exceptional with Wilf vs Jago, you have an R surname and every Setter owner in the world thinks they've had an original thought when they call the dog Rafferty - there are about 20 here. It would be like having a baby called Spot.

However that aside, Rafferty Rxxx is not something most would thank you for.

squoosh · 24/06/2013 11:38

Out of the two I?d plump for Rafferty, even though to me that isn?t a first name at all.

I?ve always thought Jago was pronounced Yah-go, have I been wrong all this time?

KobayashiMaru · 24/06/2013 11:55

you're not wrong, the alt spelling is Iago, there is no Jay sound involved at all.

laravh · 24/06/2013 11:57

I love Rafterty! And the nn Raffy is so cute. Wouldn't know how to pronounce Jago....
Jar-go??
Yah-go??
Jay-go??
Stick with Rafferty

Empress77 · 24/06/2013 12:08

I love Jago, and considered it for my boy, but also wouldnt want to cut to Jay, All the Jagos I know, surname & first name (Im cornish too) have been pronounced Jay-go rather than the Iago way which is really different. Jago is a really beautiful cornish name though, we have great names!

Empress77 · 24/06/2013 12:13

thoughts on Jago that also made me decide against it - reminds me of Draco malfoy, and also Trago Mills - but if you dont live in cornwall Trago might not be a problem for you/him! Still really love it though so may come back to it for mine!

tammytoby · 24/06/2013 12:21

Jago is lovely and goes really well with Wilf. I think Rafferty and Wilfred are too 'f' domininat.

And your surname starts with R!

Redblackcar2 · 24/06/2013 12:50

Jago

pygmy · 24/06/2013 13:02

Neither are as lovely as Wilfred! Jago I'd avoid because of the Jay thing. Rafferty is a surname to me. Rafael is much much better.

How about Rufus?

othersideofchannel · 24/06/2013 13:21

Jago is a great name and goes much better with Wilf.

I wouldn't use Rafferty if your surname starts with R as well. And I too find Rafferty a little surnamey.

LittleMilla · 24/06/2013 15:34

This is really helpful, thank you.

Do people think that Jago would get shortened to Jay? I always think of that wet boy in Eastenders when I hear the name Blush.

We're not a million miles from Trago Mills, but not quite close enough for teasing! I also wonder if people will mishear it as Diago...!?

Totally that's hilarious, haven't heard of any dogs called Rafferty, ha ha! I always think of Rufus (much as I love the name) as a dog's name.

Argh, back to the long list which includes Gilbert (not sure I want two old man names, bit twee), Heath and Huxley (both a bit leftfield, even for me!).

squoosh · 24/06/2013 15:37

Oh I love Heath!

He'll grow up to be unspeakably handsome.

Onesleeptillwembley · 24/06/2013 15:44

Not personally keen in Jago, it's inoffensive. Rafferty is awful. Doesn't even sound like a name.

perfectmummy · 24/06/2013 15:49

love both of them!

rockybalboa · 24/06/2013 15:53

Jago. I looooooooove Wilfred. Is on the list here!

ShatnersBassoon · 24/06/2013 15:55

Jago is nice enough.

Rafferty makes me think of a naff nightclub - "Every night is Ladeez Night at Rafferty's".

LittleMilla · 24/06/2013 16:30

Grin at Shatners.

I fear you might have a point (aaaahhhh)

pygmy · 24/06/2013 16:33

Gilbert! Love it.

calilark · 24/06/2013 16:43

we considered Jago (Cornish roots) but already know people with that as a surname, so we've got Jory on the list instead. Any good as an alternative?

beedles17 · 26/06/2013 21:53

isn't iago the parrot in Aladdin?

Jodiebodie · 11/07/2013 22:27

We are due in 3 weeks. I love the name Jago. I have Cornish roots too. I'm concerned however as my brother is called Jay. Do you think Jago would get shortened to Jay and then cause confusion? My husband prefers Samuel, but I wanted something a bit different as we already have a George which is quite a popular name!

FingersCrossedLegsNot · 12/07/2013 09:11

Rafferty is gorgeous! As is Wilf....swoon!

LittleMilla · 12/07/2013 09:23

So typical that since this post I'm now growing very fond of Gilbert. With our R surname I am worried that Rafferty will just be too much of a mouthful.

My brother jokingly said that if we go for Bertie our childrens' birthday party will sound like a register for the old people's home - his are called Bea and Kitty!

GwendolineMaryLacey · 12/07/2013 09:33

Love Jago. If I'd had any Cornish roots at all I'd have used it. Oh and if I'd had a boy that would have helped :o

wizzler · 12/07/2013 23:24

Prefer Gilbert to Rafferty or Jago.
