Who broke the MN rules when it came to naming their babies?

Just had a look at the MN name ad at the top of the page, seems there are a lot of MN rules Grin

DD1 has a very unusual name with a slightly unusual spelling - suits her down to the ground and we love it.

DD2 has, according to MN, got a very common name, perhaps even considered 'chavvy' by some, although we don't know anyone else by the same name, and it's not in the top 100 for England or Wales. It's also Welsh, and we are not, although we both have Celtic heritage (me more than DH) so Welsh blood is a possibility. We have to correct the pronunciation with most people. And, her middle name is French, and we are not. But, again, it suits her down to the ground and we love it.

Oh, and both their names mean the same thing - that was a coincidence, because initially I thought DD2's name meant something else as I have loved it for years, but only found out it's actual meaning when I was pregnant with her.

So who else has broken The Rules and couldn't give a hoot?

Looks like I did... DS is Andrew James. (James is a family name for both of us).

I have gone through my whole life with a Gaelic name which very few people can spell or pronounce (and generally, as soon as they master the one, they forget how to do the other). I then married a man with a surname that is inevitably either misspelled or mispronounced. I was determined that DS was not going to have the same problems as I did - his surname will be enough!

ShowOfHands · 24/06/2013 12:31

Och you can't please everybody. DS's name is being actively hated on this thread for example.

tammytoby · 24/06/2013 12:34

EVERY single name will be hated by someone for some reason. It could be too popular, too unusual, too chavvy, too try hard, too posh, too religious, too foreign, too 'gay', too boring, too whatever...!

DuelingFanjo · 24/06/2013 12:37

I did! I called my son 'Bob' - JUST Bob. and gave him a name begining with 'J' as a second name.

Apparently he will be scarred by all the bullying he will get Shock

TolliverGroat · 24/06/2013 12:40

Those were never supposed to be "MN rules" they were from a thread on "what rules did you set yourself when choosing your DCs' names" and MNHQ just got a bit carried away with the need to cut and paste-- create content to support the Baby Names section when they spun it off into its own tab.

RoooneyMara · 24/06/2013 12:42

Ah Tolliver...that makes more sense Smile

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 24/06/2013 12:43

I have a Jack

largeginandtonic · 24/06/2013 12:48

I sincerely hope I have broken all rules.

Life would be dull otherwise, eh?

amazingmumof6 · 24/06/2013 12:51

tammy I'm intrigued.

what would be too gay? or too lesbian for that matter? Grin Grin Wink

KnittedWaffle · 24/06/2013 13:05

DD has a common name ending in 'la'

DS1 has a very uncommon Gaelic (also Greek with a different spelling) name which is similar to a more common one so most people pronounce it incorrectly. It also begins with 'K'.

DS2 also has a Gaelic name. It's also uncommon but getting more popular. I chose the less usual spelling and although I usually get compliments one old lady did say
'I'm not going to take a guess at how to say that name, I can't even work out if it's a boys' name' Grin
(His name is Torran and he's a great big hairy bruiser of a baby who in no way resembles a girl!)

mouseymummy · 24/06/2013 13:08

My pfb is "madison" this is classed as chavvy or "just plain awful" as one mn-er called the name... Lovely! I love her name, it proper suits her and I can't imagine any other name!!

Dd2 has a name that's not broken any of these "rules" but I don't really care, her name is beautiful and again suits her down to a tee plus the meaning is very much true too!

LalyRawr · 24/06/2013 13:54

Oh I break the MN naming rules so badly I'm surprised I'm still allowed here!

DD has a 'chavvy' first name, which is Irish (neither me nor OH are) and has multiple accepted spellings and is generally in the top 100. Her middle name is both a surname and a boys name and is also in the top 100.

I was going to post in the baby name section before I had her but after flicking through I figured that seeing as my DD was not going to be called Elodie, Ottilie, Persephone (how do you pronounce that by the way?) or any of the 'grandma chic' type names, that there wasn't really much point.

No offence to any of those names, I just don't like them, but they seem to be suggested every thread.

MissingMyMarbles · 24/06/2013 14:51

I think you're right, Tolliver; it was not so much The Rules as individual rules portrayed as such. That said, when you look at the name threads, a lot of the opinions concur with the article. As a poster said upthread, if you love it use it, but I still wonder how many people are influenced by some of the strong opinions on here, or if they change their choice as a result and maybe regret it.

Per-seph-oney

SirChenjin · 24/06/2013 15:01

Oops, that didn't work - emphasis on the 'seph' bit

CoolStoryBro · 24/06/2013 15:04

I used alliteration and DS rocks his name.

The one that always makes me laugh is when people go on about whether a name is suitable for a Judge. Having a flaky name doesn't seem to have harmed Cherie Blair!

Perse- phoney would be better!Grin

SirChenjin · 24/06/2013 16:25

Hang on Amazing - I thought it was Per seph oney (or maybe uh-ney would have been better)? Have I mispronounced it all these years? Blush

amazingmumof6 · 24/06/2013 16:41

sirchenij

you are correct.
I was joking that a just-to-be-different pronunciation is kind of fake.
phoneyGrin

geddit?

SirChenjin · 24/06/2013 16:43

Aha - that penny has just dropped with a great big clatter on my head! I am about the most gullible (and some would say thick) person you are ever likely to meet Blush Grin

Dackyduddles · 24/06/2013 16:44

Me - dds are hyphens and so am I and I give nary a gnats fart what mn thinks of that tbh.

fussychica · 24/06/2013 17:04

God yes - DS has a name which can't be shortened - on purpose, we didn't want him called a nn we wanted his actual name to be used which I always thought was the general purpose of a name.

It's from the bible but we aren't religious.

His middle name is his dad's name (his granddads had old man down the pub names (Len/Ron) so we stayed away from those) and DH & DS both have the same initials although in a different order.

FunnysInLaJardin · 24/06/2013 17:07

I complied with every single rule

amazingmumof6 · 24/06/2013 17:20

LaJardin Now I have to know your kids' names, please!Gin
