Eek, retrospective nickname panic: Alasdhair

Okay, Alasdhair (more unusual family spelling than this but changed to avoid accidental outing) is new DS's name. DD (3) is calling him Alice. When discouraged from this it is Allah.
Obvs neither ideal. Awkwardly we're not mad keen on Al or Ali. Initials are AHSH, but one of DD's close friends is Ash, tho' I could be persuaded into Ash.
Any ideas?

See Ally bear I get, and like. Tho' my nickname is Bear so not for us. Tagliatelle on the other hand- crazy left field but good. DD has a wackola nickname that everyone comments on but it just happened and it really suits her. Doubtless friends wikl change it as she goes to school.
Evolving nickname brigade: I do understand the (Enid Blyton) argument of letting other people choose your nickname. But when the key other person is a three year old girl and you are going to be saddled with a girl's name or an offensive (to a lot of people locally) nickname then I think a proactive approach is very helpful.
Alec or Asta it is. Thanks for all the input- am grateful

But Asta is a girl's name Confused

5madthings · 27/06/2013 21:19

You cant choose nicknames, they evolve.

My dp is alastair, i never shorten it but various others do to al mainly.

Ds4 is rudi, our toddler dd calls him....sushi! Grin

MackerelOfFact · 27/06/2013 21:34

Asa? I love this as a name in it's own right, but would work as a nickname for Alistair.

FWIW I would probably end up calling him Alibob and then shortening it to Bob if he was mine. Grin

BadRoly · 27/06/2013 21:39

I have an Ally Grub.

Kick hijack re the spelling though - how did those with an Ali/Ally decide on the spelling for school etc? We went for Ally as dh used to watch Question of Sport when Ally McCoist was a team captain but now I wonder if we chose the feminine version?

rockdakazbah · 28/06/2013 08:32

I prefer the Ally spelling and my DN has a friend that has this spelling. My DH chose the spelling and preferred the Ali version. I think both spellings are fine and if anything, would say that Ali is probably more feminine. I went to school with a few Alisons who went by the nn Ali

formicadinosaur · 29/06/2013 06:54

Alex or Alec

nooka · 29/06/2013 07:28

My cousin is an Alasdair known as Alec. I think this is one of the traditional shortenings.

nooka · 29/06/2013 07:30

BadRoly I'd think Ali was short for Alison, and Ally much more likely for Alasdair. I've not seen Ally/Ali as a shortening for Alexander (although I know a Zander, Sandy and several Alexes)

Branleuse · 29/06/2013 07:37

my mum was going to call me Alasdair if i was a boy, shortened to Dair

Thank you for the reassurances Grin

Nooka - our Ally is an Alexander! He really dislikes being called Alex, Ally came from dc1 not being able to pronounce Alex though Grin

rockdakazbah · 02/07/2013 04:57

DH Has told me that our Ali's spelling was inspired by UB40's Ali Campbell!

caramelgirl · 02/07/2013 05:47

My friend claimed to have gone to school with his son; known as Little Ali Campbell. Always seemed a bit lacking in originality that...

At nursery DS2 was called Ali I prefer Al, but they ignored me. He's now at school and they use his full name, I agree NN do develop and a planned one may not stick

AlmondFrangipani · 03/07/2013 20:47

My bro is Alastair and he is called Aly or Al which my Mum hates!! I am Alex and I also get called Al without personally using it so I think it is inevitable!

mikkii · 03/07/2013 20:53

My DS is Alessandro Valentino, we call him Tino (his second name being the "main" one, it just sounded better this way round) but one of his uncles calls him "Ali V" if he wants to push my buttons.

I would say you can decide their nicknames. DS is as above. DD1 is Gabriela, shortened to Ela and DD2 is Luisa, shortened to LoobyLou!

idiot55 · 04/07/2013 17:17

Why do you need to find a shortening, his name is Alasdhair, that's it! I don't get the shortening thing at all! If you wanted an Alex then you should have called him that! Sorry you've identified my bugbear!

Pixieonthemoor · 04/07/2013 18:52

Surely Dhair would be a good option? Sounds seriously cool!!

Willabywallaby · 06/07/2013 07:26

I do slightly agree with idiot55, MN does seem obsessed with NN, so analysing the full name and the NN.

caramelgirl · 06/07/2013 09:57

Grr, have posted already that I was happy to let NN evolve, did so with DD. Now worried that his sister may unintentionally land him with a terrible one. I don't want him ridiculed, hence issue.
His name is an alternating generation thing so has gone on for v long time in family. Very happy with it, just don't want him being saddled with NN he hates..
Thanks for constructive advice, alas Dhair (which I agree is super cool) won't work with wacky family spelling.
Liking hearing all the funny family nicknames.

I wasn't directing that at you OP but MN 'voice' whoever that is Hmm. If you keep calling him the full name his sister will drop hers. A friend of mine has a Maddie, her sister 2YO was calling her Madga a few months ago, it's now Maddie.

My DS2 called my Dad Baba for a few months which we encouraged, it quickly became Grandpa.

My Alistair himself thinks I'm taking about him when we go to Asda Blush

caramelgirl · 08/07/2013 21:56

Oh good ww , seeing as we both have Asda Allisters I'll let it be then!
