Is it odd to name a child after a pet?

DH and I had a lovely cat named milo about 10years ago. He died about 4 years ago. I'm PG and don't have many boys names that I like. I really like milo, but is it weird since we had a cat called that?

My friend's 15 year old niece just named her baby after her recently deceased dog, which I think we all saw as a sign that parenthood had hit her to early! Bit different in your case though if you're an adult, it's several years since Milo 1 died, and you just like the name rather than using it in mourning for your pet! Milo's a great name and the cat will be forgotten as soon as your little boy is here to own the name

too early, even

Shropshiremummy2b · 21/06/2013 16:18

My gorgeous dog is called Doug. Man will I regret naming him that 5 years ago if I have a boy. People already thing i'm obsessed with the dog so to name the baby Doug too.....! My husband thinks we should do it regardless! I don't want to be the crazy dog/child woman of Shropshire!!!!

We named ds after our Rottie. His initials are her name.

So PERFECTLY NORMAL

Shanghaidiva · 21/06/2013 16:30

My brother named his son after his dog - he's called Jake.

runningonwillpower · 21/06/2013 16:34

Sorry, but it is odd.

How would you feel if you were named after a dead horse? (I know someone who did this.)

GingerPCatt · 21/06/2013 16:55

I'm named after my dead aunt, but I see your point.
We've moved a couple of times since milo the cat so none of our friends would associate the name but family would.
Its still early days, so I'll leave it off the list for now.

you're not naming them after (ie, in memory) of the pet? That might be weird. If it's just the name that you happen to love best, then I wouldn't think it's at all odd, no.

scaevola · 21/06/2013 17:24

It's Ok as long as it's not Rover or Fido. Or Phydeaux.

jessjessjess · 21/06/2013 17:24

I think it's weird and wouldn't give a child a name I'd used for a pet.

Arcticwaffle · 21/06/2013 17:26

It's surprisingly common. We called dd2 the same name as one of our cats. When I'd first had the cat I'd been a long way from even starting to think about dc. We reasoned that dd2 would be around longer than the cat. After a day or two it became clear that we couldn't have dd2 and cat with the same name so we renamed the cat was -(2nd half of old name). The cat couldn't tell the difference.

My foster sister did, but her dog had been her final link to her dad before he died. By the time she named her only child the same name as the dog nobody but our family and her blood siblings would have made the connection though, as the dog had a normal "people's" name and had neen dead 20- years. I like Milo but associate it with the chatacter in Catch 22, which is why we didn't shortlist it (literature graduate teachers with family in lots of countries end up with no names left to choosr from ;) )

In 10 years it will only be your son's name and nobody will make the connection thoughthough also think through the Tweenies link

FriskyHenderson · 21/06/2013 17:33

I did this.

The only odd thing was that it became clear that my father just had an idea that there was a Cat that lived in the house. He didn't seem to realise that every so often, the cat died and was replaced. In fact, the Cat had even moved house, from their house to mine. None of this had computed in my father's head. He just pointed at the Cat (3 cats and one house move later) and asked whether it would get confused when we called DD1. Well no, because Cat with DD1's name lived at your house and died 20 years ago. This is a different cat. It's even a different colour and a boy.

Oh he said. I'm still not convinced he's convinced it's not an issue.

usualsuspect · 21/06/2013 17:33

It's just a name you like.

I don't think its odd.

5madthings · 21/06/2013 17:38

Not odd at all its a name you like.

My sister named her son Caspar, lovely name...we had a cat called caspar as children, its long dead and its just a non issue.

Fetacat · 21/06/2013 18:04

So glad you asked this question as I have been pondering the very same thing except our cat ran away 4 years ago. If she came back after the birth it would be a bit of a shock but feel this is unlikely! Smile

Turniptwirl · 21/06/2013 18:24

I think it's weird.

But I had s friend whose family adopted two cats, one of which had the same name as my friend. The cat tended to have various nicknames instead

I think it is fine. Weird if the pet was still around.

The lesson to be learned, don't use your favourite names on your pets!

ICantRememberWhatSheSaid · 22/06/2013 00:33

The most popular 2012 UK dogs names. There are a lot more people names on the list than doggy names.

Two of my kids are named after nieghbours dogs.

WafflyVersatile · 22/06/2013 00:46

A great aunt was born on the same day as the queen. Her parents waited to hear what the princess would be called so they could do the same. However she was called Elizabeth and my great aunt's big sister was already called Elizabeth so they called her Jane after the horse.

Bit of a step down for poor great aunt Jane. Sad

MsJupiterJones · 22/06/2013 12:02

That's hilarious Waffly.

ManateeEquineOHara · 22/06/2013 12:18

Growing up our cat was Lottie, I would use it as a girl's name (not that I'm having more kids). I used to work at riding schools and did equine at college, as such I have known lots of horses, including two with both of my dc's names, I didn't think about this until recently though!

MrsVJDay · 22/06/2013 12:25

Is it weird that I read Phydeaux and thought hmm that's nice!
