DD1 is Eva, really like Nina for DD2 but are the names too similar for sisters?

I think they both have the same pattern. eeee ah. Even though one begins with e and the other N, and the 'middle' consonant is different, the overall effect is eee-ah and ee-ah. So I wouldn't. But plenty will say "oh it's fine". They are two lovely names.
What about something that doesn't end in 'a'. Eva and Susie, Eva and Lois, Eva and Lucy

Elquota · 18/06/2013 23:35

I agree with *AnotherLovelyCupOfCoffee"

I also agree with AnotherLovelyCupOfCoffee shame though because Nina is a great name.

MortifiedAdams · 19/06/2013 01:51

I love Nina but yes, too close to Eva. What about Nia? Close but doesnt sounds as similar.

Onetwo34 · 19/06/2013 02:05

I also love the name Nina but decided it was too close to DD1's name to consider it for DC2. So I feel your pain.
But yes I agree with the others that it is too similar.

bugsybill · 19/06/2013 04:30

I don't think they are too similar.

BlueStarsAtNight · 19/06/2013 09:35

I agree the sounds are too similar I wouldnt use it I'm afraid

Iseeall · 19/06/2013 09:41

They do not sound right to my ear.
I love the name Eva and not so keen on Nina.
I think you should have a longer name, so..

Eva and Angelica
Eva and Elizabeth
Eva and Antonia
Eva and Eleanor

Exhaustipated · 19/06/2013 09:43

Yes sorry :(

What about

Eva and...

Rose
Lois
Frances
Orla
Cora

Artichook · 19/06/2013 10:52

I don't think they are too similar but then I have kids with similar names. I figure you have your name for your whole life and its only a very short period and a small number of people who will think of it in the context of your siblings names.

I love both names and would go for it.

bugsybill · 19/06/2013 13:23

I agree artichook.

Their names are for life, not just for their childhood, so why give them your second best name just because your favourite name was similar sounding. They have different initials, they don't rhyme and they have different meanings/origins. I think there are enough differences.

ArabellaBeaumaris · 19/06/2013 19:38

I agree with artichook too. I have two DDs, both with 2 syllable names ending in -a (one of them is Nina actually).

FriskyHenderson · 19/06/2013 19:44

There's a Nona at school - no idea of its origin but goes with Eva.

ArabellaBeaumaris · 19/06/2013 21:27

There's a Nona in a Rumer Godden book

I know a Nula, it's a lovely name.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 19/06/2013 21:45

Does it sound to similar to YOU? Are you going to feel silly/embarrassed for them? "Eva and Nina, Eva and Nina", try saying it aloud. I disagree that a small number of people will know you in the context of your siblings' names, and for a short time. Particularly if you only have 2 children, everyone who knows you as a family will know them as "Eva and [whatever]" if they live to be 100. (Any more and they will probably be "the girls" or "the kids" it seems.)

How about Nancy, Nora, Lana or Nell?

ginand · 21/06/2013 22:38

Thanks all, really helpful. I think I have a tendency to think a name's for life and it looks like we have a preferred style so might just go for it...
