Annabel or Amelie?

Girl - Amelie or Annabel? Dh loves Amelie, I like it but feel that it's maybe a bit too trendy for us! We both like Annabel too and think this may be more sensible?

Boy - Archie or George?

Honest opinions please - I have another 20 weeks to wait anyway so plenty of time Grin

If you love Amelie, go for that. They're both very popular so you may as well choose the one you LOVE most.

For boys, I prefer George as Archie sounds too cutesy for my taste.

BarnyardDance · 17/06/2013 15:00

Amelie and Annabel are both great names, go for the one you love!

I prefer George rather than Archie.

Leeds2 · 17/06/2013 15:02

Amelie, and George.

JacqueslePeacock · 17/06/2013 15:04

I agree with you that Amelie is trying too hard to be fashionable. Same to Archie. I'd go with Annabel, which sounds more classic, and George.

tammytoby · 17/06/2013 15:04

Amelie! I'm not keen on Archie at all, so would choose George.

Annabel and George

tammytoby · 17/06/2013 15:13

I know an Amelie whose name never gets shortened - I think it rolls off the tongue beautifully and easily.

Layl77 · 17/06/2013 15:17

Amelie and annabel both lovely. Prefer George

CruCru · 17/06/2013 16:22

Both Amelie and Annabel are very nice. One word of caution - where are you? A south coast / London accent mangles anything with Bel in - think Annabewl. Amelie sometimes sounds funny in a Scottish accent.

bugsybill · 17/06/2013 16:36

If you really prefer Amelie then choose it. I wouldn't base your decision solely on the basis of avoiding a popular name. Go wit the one you like the most :)

I prefer Archie as I can't get away from the George-peppa pig association.

AnotherLovelyCupOfCoffee · 17/06/2013 16:48

Annabel or George. I think there are more Amelies and Emilys and Emilias at the moment.

I like Archie and George. Again, George is the more classic choice.

Elquota · 17/06/2013 17:00

Annabel and George, both lovely classic names.

harverina · 17/06/2013 18:09

Mmmm think I am swaying towards George or Annabel Grin I do like the other names but I am not very trendy and think that they are more trendy Smile

Thanks guys

Yes, Amelie was something like number 53 in the England and Wales 2011 baby name charts whereas Annabel was about 120 (though Annabelle was about 89) and has been in more or less the same position for the last decade (i.e. it's not faddy). Annabel is on my list if I have a DD but one thing that does bother me slightly about it is the variety of spellings (I constantly have to spell out my (very common) name and it does my head in), that's one thing you wouldn't have to worry about with Amelie.

sleepingbeautiful · 17/06/2013 19:13

Annabel and George.

I know 2 Amelies born in May. Even though Annabel is also popular at the moment, it won't date the same way as it's been used across many generations in Britain.

EhricLovesTeamQhuay · 17/06/2013 20:48

Amelie is very dated.

harverina · 17/06/2013 20:58

Really ehric? I think it's quite popular now though.

Definitely Annabel and George - lovely names :)

orangepudding · 17/06/2013 22:09

Annabel is a beautiful classic name. Amelie has been very used over the last few years and has become dated.

cheekbyjowl · 17/06/2013 22:44

could you have amabel /amabelle ? combine the two.

AnotherLovelyCupOfCoffee · 17/06/2013 22:51

I think that Audrey Tatou film Amelie came out about 12 years ago, so yes, there are still babies being called Amelie but I'd predict it's at the end of its life span. Of course that is just a hunch. But there have been Amelies for a decade + now. There will always be a few Annabels but it is less associated to a decade, like Amelie is thanks to Audrey Tatou.

AnotherLovelyCupOfCoffee · 17/06/2013 22:53

I prefer just Emily to Amelie. They are almost the same, but the simplicity of Emily and its lack of association to a film makes it a better choice imo

IHeartKingThistle · 17/06/2013 22:53

Annabel and George.

harverina · 17/06/2013 22:54

I love Emily but its very similar to my own name so not an option and dh has vetoed it for this reason.
