What do you think of Rory? Or is it usually spelt Roary?

I think we are having a boy this time and DH is choosing our boys name. Our girls names are unusual and we wanted something unusual for a boy but Rory is the only name DH can think of and actually likes.

I do like it and it goes well with the middle names patrick Joseph which is after my DFIL who sadly isnt here anymore :(

Rory Patrick Joseph last name, when I say it in my head it sounds lovely :)

I love it. It's spelled Rory.

sleepyhead · 17/06/2013 12:00

It's never spelled Roary Shock. That's the racing car.

I wouldn't say it's unusual, but I love it (disclaimer: I have one Wink).

It's the anglicised spelling of Irish/Scottish Ruari or Ruairi or Ruaridh or Ruairidh.

Rory Patrick Joseph sounds great.

Purpletots · 17/06/2013 12:02

haha yes I thought it was the racing car!!!

No I don't think it's too unusual either, How old is your Rory?

Love Rory...that's what my dh has picked for our baby too (due Oct). We're struggling for girls names though.

Rory is the usual spelling in England. Think there is an alternative Irish/Scottish spelling though.

Purpletots · 17/06/2013 12:03

The more i say it the more I love it! I hope he doesn't change his mind now.

We have Isabelle Alice for a girl :)

I have a 10 year old Rory. He sometimes gets cards/invites addressed to Roary, which quite frankly does my nut

Purpletots · 17/06/2013 12:05

Does anyone ever try to shorten it in anyway? not sure what to but thought id ask.

sleepyhead · 17/06/2013 12:05

Mine is 6. Not sure about England, but in Scotland it's a top 100 name but not top 50.

You'd not likely get 2 in a class (although up here you might get one of the other spellings).

sleepyhead · 17/06/2013 12:07

Ds gets called Roar sometimes, but no, it's not one you really shorten.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 17/06/2013 12:07

Nope, we don't shorten it, but some of his friends' do. They call him Roar, which he loathes (as do I).

Purpletots · 17/06/2013 12:12

oooh im so excited now. Bloody hope DH doesn't change his mind.

It was 110 in 2012 England & Wales baby name stats, but I think it's getting more popular... I've seen it mentioned on here quite a bit recently.

Not too concerned though, it's such a lovely name and I know what you mean about loving it the more you say it...

elQuintoConyo · 17/06/2013 12:19

It's for boys or girls - isn't the younger of the Gilmore Girls Rory?
Lovely name, either way. Couldn't use it for DS as I can't pronounce Rs very well: Wowy doesn't have the same ring!

DrMcDreamysWife · 17/06/2013 12:23

Rory is a fantastic name. Strong and kind sounding. In Scotland I know a few ruaridh's. I love your middle names too

CocoKev · 17/06/2013 12:36

We have a Rory- DS2, nearly 6 mo. We weren't completely sure about it at first but now I love it- it's really grown on me. DS1 calls him Ro-Ro or Roars, both of which I think are pretty cute. DS2 might forbid us from using either when he's older but they'll do for now!

Do it do it do it!

squoosh · 17/06/2013 12:42

I know lots of Irish Rorys, it's a great name.

Not a fan of any of the authentic spellings or their pronunciations.

AnotherLovelyCupOfCoffee · 17/06/2013 12:46

I like Rory. I'm in Ireland the adult ones I know are all Rorys. So don't feel you have to spell it Ruairidh

AnotherLovelyCupOfCoffee · 17/06/2013 12:56

"it's for boys or girls". Maybe in America! I thinkit's horrible for a girl!

TheOrchardKeeper · 17/06/2013 12:59

I love it! I'm half Irish though so definitely biased Grin

It means 'ruddy cheeked' too which is so damn cute.

Congrats OP.

fishandlilacs · 17/06/2013 13:06

I know an Aurora who is usually known as NN Rory, I like it for a girl as a nn.

Love it but makes me think of Dr who, no bad thing IMO but maybe different for you.

rockybalboa · 17/06/2013 13:28

Love it, I have one too (aged 2). But you will get people idiots spelling it Roary because of the racing car. Sigh.

kerala · 17/06/2013 14:09

Love it and have no axe to grind as have girls. Use it its great suits man or boy strong yet not overused. Please no more Noah's or bens!

boardingschoolbaby · 17/06/2013 14:36

I am married to a Ruairi. It does get shortened to Rorz, but I love the name.

hollyisalovelyname · 17/06/2013 14:56

Love it for a boy.
I think one of Robert Kennedy's (JFK's brother) daughters is called Rory

Babel1111 · 18/06/2013 08:17

Love love love Rory! Gorgeous name
