I think it is welsh but a wide range of people seem to have had it historically from English to Pakistani

I like it with this spelling. I also like Alice. I don't think Alys sounds pretentious. I would probably think that you had Welsh links with using this spelling, not that you need them.

Love it but child will be forever having to spell her name out and correct people.

I would only use this spelling if you and/or DP are welsh or you are living in Wales.

First time I read the post I thought you were trying to say A-Leese!

it is Welsh (as am I) and I love it. On our list (though dc likely to be a boy) . I can understand people not liking it but can't see why it would be pretentious. Having said that I probably would not use it if not Welsh myself.

Love it - it is the welsh spelling and is a family name from my paternal grandmother; my sister and her daughter both have it as a middle name.

unless you're Welsh and in Wales I would stick with Alice, otherwise you'll spend all your time spelling it and telling people how to pronounce it (when I read it I read Aleece, not Alice).

I think Alys looks much prettier than Alice which looks prissy. But it will be a pain in the neck explaining the spelling constantly.

Not pretentious, just Welsh. Wouldn't use it if neither you nor DH is Welsh though.

Prefer it to Alice but can't use it as we have an Alasdair! I don't think you'd have to be Welsh to use it - there are an awful lot of Islas and Finlays without Scottish heritage!

Only if you are living in Welsh Wales, anywhere else, your dd is going to have to spend her life 'correcting' people, or automatically spelling her name every time she has to give it.
