Cecil - thoughts?

As names like Arthur and Stanley become more mainstream will a name like Cecil or Francis make a comeback?

I thought this to myself and re Cecil thought "no never". But then I'd have thought the same about Stanley.

I like Cecil! I'm less keen on Francis or Stanley though.

Alisvolatpropiis · 11/06/2013 21:56

See I thought it to myself and thought "no never" but the more I've thought about the more I like it! Grin

Lucy Honeychurch's totally wrong fiance in 'Room with a View' pronounced 'Seesil' but even so, he's put me off the name. Never been that keen on George either though, and she married him.

Elquota · 11/06/2013 22:49

I think if it was going to make a comeback it might have done so by now. It sounds so weedy.

EuroShaggleton · 11/06/2013 22:50

I was going to mention the awful Cecil in a Room with a View too!

fossil971 · 11/06/2013 22:54

I thought of "Sissil" from Room with a View too, but actually Cecil is a great and unusual name. I should go for it. Like Cecil Balmond the architect for example.

fridayfreedom · 11/06/2013 22:59

Cecil is a caterpillar, Cecil is my friend.... Story we tell at campfires with scouts, sorry

MerryMarigold · 11/06/2013 23:01

Isn't it always pronounced 'Sissle'?

I personally hate it. I think it's all the 'ss's, sounds snakey.

Love Francis though.

I think Mark and John are due comebacks.

Cooroo · 11/06/2013 23:05

My dad was called Cecil! Mind you he'd be 95 now if he was still alive...

It's a tricky name for anyone who can't pronounce the 's' sound properly (like me).

willyoulistentome · 11/06/2013 23:08

Cecil sounds just so wet.
Francis is cool.

squoosh · 12/06/2013 00:18

Bloody hell, Cecil really would be the limit as far as the 'old man chic' trend is concerned.

I'd have to start a petition or something, or maybe wave my fist at the sky.

Cease with Cilly Cecil!

squoosh · 12/06/2013 00:19

I don't think a name such as Francis should be tainted by a Cecil association.

Lighthousekeeping · 12/06/2013 00:39

I don't think it will ever be cool. I don't know what I think to all these old mad names. Every other boy seems to be Arthur these days.

Rhubarbgarden · 12/06/2013 16:46

I quite like it. I really like Francis too, and know a three year old one.

BookieMonster · 12/06/2013 16:51

Cecil Parkinson. Nuff said.

IHeartKingThistle · 12/06/2013 16:51

I think Francis is already back a bit, I've taught 2 or 3. Never taught a Cecil!

Funny how Cecily is just beautiful though!

mirry2 · 12/06/2013 16:53

Francis is nice but Cecil?......shudder

Startail · 12/06/2013 17:00

DD's DF(rather than BF) is a Francis, never thought twice about it, but Cecil just No.

Floggingmolly · 12/06/2013 17:09

I refuse to believe anyone is seriously contemplating Cecil as a name for a baby. This is a joke, right?

jaminthemiddle · 12/06/2013 18:09

I know a Cecil and he is great and not in the slightest bit weedy.

TheRealFellatio · 12/06/2013 18:12

awful

TheRealFellatio · 12/06/2013 18:13

And I say that as someone who almost called my 18 year old Stanley.

Lighthousekeeping · 12/06/2013 19:17

Francis is popular. I never have thought of it as an old mans name. Or cool. There's loads of boy and girl Frankies running around.

scarlettsmummy2 · 12/06/2013 19:21

I don't like it- makes me think of elderly men, but not cute for a baby in the way some other old fashioned names are.

Alisvolatpropiis · 12/06/2013 19:26

Flogging it was a passing thought about name trends, you don't need to stage an intervention Grin

Interesting responses on the whole!
