Arthur, Tristan, Alexander and similar, plus nicknames

What other names might we like? I like Zachary, Leo, Sebastian, Ruben and Oliver, too, but they have all been vetoed. DH is German, so it needs to work in both languages.

Arthur - are there any other nns apart from Art/Arty?

Tristan - nn?

Alexander -- anything other than Alex?

Alastair/Alistair?

Nn for Alexander - I know a Xander. Pronounced Zander.

fussychica · 08/06/2013 19:32

Ali nn for Alexander
Aiden
Adam
Matthew/Mathias

BabyLabyrinth · 08/06/2013 19:49

Adam has been suggested by DH this evening! We both quite like Mathias, but there are quite a few spelling variations, which annoys me.

Alistair is the wrong colour ... I see names in colours and Alistair is all washed out and pale.

Arthur is the best name ever! nothing to do with the fact that my adorable 5mo is called Arthur!

We also liked Milo, Reuben, Sidney, Elliot and Oliver if that is any help?

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 08/06/2013 20:42

Nicknames for Alexander:

Alex
Al
Alec
Alick
Lex
Xander
Sandy

I think Arthur is top of the list. (Congrats on your DS, Doodle!) I love Reuben/Ruben, too, but DH thinks the Ru sound in German doesn't sound that nice Hmm. Leonard was used by a friend just recently.

Any ideas for a nn for Tristan?

Tristan: Stan, Trix (variants).
I'd be searching your DH's family tree for nice men's names.

BabyLabyrinth · 08/06/2013 20:48

Like all those nicknames!

I like the name Arthur Grin and other names I also like (so therefore you may!) include
Stanley
Frederick
George
Henry
Angus
Eric
Cedric
Albert
Alfred
Some nice Germanic ones there!

BTW IME Arthur is not usually shortened. Is a nickname essential?

BabyLabyrinth · 08/06/2013 21:32

Great suggestions, thank you.

DH doesn't seem to think a nickname is necessary either and I just read that thread where people who choose nicknames before birth are considered odd, but I like nicknames! I'm always called by my nickname, so is DH (when speaking in English). DD has a name that doesn't lend itself too well to nicknames, but she still has one that has kind of naturally evolved over time. Maybe that would be the case with Arthur ...

Henry and Frederick have also been floating around our list.

As I am only 4 weeks pregnant, I may be getting ahead of myself slightly Grin I am aware it doesn't have to be decided tonight!

Having said that, we both really like Arthur Jonathan. Thoughts?

Ashoething · 08/06/2013 21:37

I love Tristan! I wanted it for dc3 but dh vetoed as too posh!

Elquota · 08/06/2013 21:38

Too much "th" in Arthur Jonathan IMHO.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 08/06/2013 21:41

I love Tristan. Its on my list. Smile

LanternGirl · 08/06/2013 22:07

Tristan - Tris is the obvious nn. Arthur Johnathan is great. I thought once about using Archie as a nn for Arthur.

BlueChampagne · 08/06/2013 22:34

I've come across a Tristan shortened to Stan rather than Tris.
Alexander can be Sandy (Scottish) or Sasha (European)
Art for Arthur (better than Wart a la Sword in the Stone)
Don't be afraid of NNs that don't derive from names at all. They will evolve.

Doodledumdums · 08/06/2013 22:43

Thanks for the congrats Smile Congrats on your pregnancy!

DH and I both have names that really don't lend themselves to nicknames, and I always really wanted one (no idea why!), so we did put quite a bit of thought into nicknames that may come from the names that we liked. Our Arthur has pretty much been called Artie by everyone except my inlaws from day one! My inlaws object to it because they think that if we encourage the name Artie then he will get called Artie Farty at school and will be bullied...not entirely sure that is true! We often affectionately call him Artie Farty, so he will be used to it!

BabyLabyrinth · 09/06/2013 06:57

Oh Artie Farty is so sweet when he's little! And probably quite appropriate once he's a teenager ... In all seriousness though, I hadn't thought about the rhyming. My inlaws object so much to DD's name (it's too English apparently) that they just never ever call her it. I'm sure they will object to whatever this baby is called on principle.

In German the name would be pronounced without the TH; it sounds like just a T -- so Art-ur Yo-na-tan. I would pronounce it with the TH obviously, so would my family.

But all the support for Tristan makes me want to reconsider it! I prefer Tris to Stan as the nickname -- all I hear is the Eminem song from my yoof when I hear Stan. Is Tristan really posh?!

OP posts:
bananaramma · 09/06/2013 07:51

I would choose a name that is pronounced similarly in both languages. I like Sebastian, Alexander or how about Quentin?

forevergreek · 09/06/2013 08:23

I love Arthur but all German relatives and friends wouldnt be able to pronounce. I would also so for the same pronounciation across both languages

Alfred/ Albert /Arnold
Florian
Tobias
Timon
Kasper
Gabriel
Maximilian
Leonard
Dillon
Dexter
