Hollie Mae

I have already named my daughter as she is 8 weeks old, but just wanted to know what everyone thought as I think it's beautiful. I know not everyone thinks the same but just curious!

FWIW, I'm not boasting or showing off or anything like that, for those MNetters who seem to jump to conclusions.

Also would love to know what names you think would go well with Hollie Mae for when she has a little brother or sister. Wont be for another 2 or 3 years, but want to have some names on my radar or I might have to ask her for ideas and pooface or pandapants is probably the kind of name she'd come up with at 3 and I can't see that going down too well. :)

Partners last name ends in Y, if that helps. :)

Haha. Not saying. I'm too sensitive. It's not Klay though. Or any other name beginning with K.

WuzzleMonkey · 04/06/2013 21:58

I like Holly.

I consider 'Hollie' a misspelling.

To me it's like the difference between 'Lily' and 'Lilly'

But of course you can name your child whatever you wish to, and spell it however you wish to.

HenriettaPye · 04/06/2013 21:58

Everlong I think op means that there is not a set spelling for names- parents choose names and can choose whatever way to spell them, whether that be Alfie or Alfey, Catherine or Kathryn.

I think Hollie Mae is nice, however I associate holly more with Christmas time babies, not spring! However that's only my opinion.

Congrats on your baby girl. :)

I'm not overly keen on the name if I'm honest OP, but I second what everyone else has said about the fact that if you like it, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks Smile

HenriettaPye · 04/06/2013 22:07

But it's not wrong! The child is called Hollie, so to spell it Holly would be wrong, as that is not how the parents have spelt it! Confused

HenriettaPye · 04/06/2013 22:09

There are many names pronounced the same, but one is not 'wrong'

Think Jon/John
Kerry/Kerrie
Jonathon/Jonathan
Conor/Connor/Conner
Miley/Mylee

kitsmummy · 04/06/2013 22:09

I think it's gross, but you did ask!

Hollie is an accepted spelling now. I wouldn't choose that spelling, I'd have chosen Holly, but certainly wouldn't put it in the same category as Pheobe or Sharlotte!!

wannabedomesticgoddess · 04/06/2013 22:12

I love it. Never heard of it before. And I like the Hollie spelling.

Always liked the name Tori-Mae. No idea why. But I do like Mae spelt that way too.

TheHerringScreams · 04/06/2013 22:13

I like Hollie Mae, both names are pretty and cheerful sounding. I think Holly May wouldn't have worked as well (too many ys which make it look a bit over the top) but I like the spelling of Hollie a lot, and Mae is just a plain perfect name, and the Mae spelling kind of separates the name from the actual month of May which is a good thing of she was born in April. Congratulations- eight weeks late, I know.

HenriettaPye · 04/06/2013 22:16

I know 2 Mylees. Just because its not your cup of tea doesn't ran its wrong, there's no rules about spelling

Every name has had to be made up at some point

everlong, you are coming across as the name police. Getting annoyed over Hollie versus Holly. Why?

My DD2 (4) is Hollie Mae was also born beginning of April, her sister DD1 (9) is Jaimee-Leigh. I have my reasons for why my girl's were named as such and don't care if people don't like the name or how they are spelt.

nooka · 04/06/2013 22:33

This thread seems a bit masochistic to me.

Mae is a long used variant of May.

Hollie is a modern variant of Holly that a large number of people will consider to be a misspelling, because Holly is a dictionary defined word used to name a particular plant. However as with a lot of changes to traditional names it is becoming widespread. Like using Lillie instead of Lily.

Personally I think this is a bad thing. Obviously the OP does not. I assume the 'ie' end is felt to be prettier or more feminine perhaps? Seems to me like it will be a nuisance to have to spell, but perhaps not, as future generations with names spelled every which way will presumably have to spell out even the most common names.

NuzzleandScratch · 04/06/2013 22:47

The thing with using a less usual spelling is the person will constantly have to spell their name, which could get annoying.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 04/06/2013 22:58

Congratulations on your lovely DD.

Smile

I'm trying to understand why you think telling us your DD's name could be perceived sa boasting or showing off though. Am I missing something?

Confused
hellokitty123 · 04/06/2013 23:14

I dislike the name (as you asked!)

Congratulations on your dd!

Littlecherublegs · 04/06/2013 23:16

I think Hollie Mae is ok - a bit too 'cutesy' for me but inoffensive enough! Smile

And for the record, I would actually have spelt it Holly Mae.

OP you also asked about potential future siblings names (which I dont think anyone has answered yet???!) so here are a few suggestions:

Keira
Layla
Scarlett
Megan
Freya
Jessica
Nicole
Maya
Lilia
Alana

Alfie
Luca
Jayden
Dylan
Jake
Ashley
Finn
Ryan
Bradley
Max
