Why are there so few Diana's

considering the everlasting popularity of the princess, other royal names are very popular why not Diana?

Just something I was pondering last night but I might be wrong. I do know one Diana but she is in her late fifties.

Personally, I don't think it is a nice sounding name.

It's never been hugely popular has it? Just the odd one here and there.

CairoPrankster · 28/05/2013 09:12

thinking that should be Dianas not Diana's, damn poor grammer

Good question. DD1 was born a month after Diana died and I thought she might grow up surrounded by little Dianas, but I don't know any.

pinkandsparklytoo · 28/05/2013 09:14

I like the name but I don't like that the first thing anyone would think of was the Princess of Wales

scaevola · 28/05/2013 09:14

I like it as a name, and perhaps it will revive, like other Royal names such as Adelaide, Maude, Eugenie or Berengaria.

Some people are also put off because it starts with "die"

CairoPrankster · 28/05/2013 09:27

Good point about the 'Die' scaevola
I have to admit that I don't like the name much but considering the popularity of names like Elizabeth, Harry, William, Charlie and even Victoria I just thought it was odd.
Earnshaw I remember thinking the same thing

Well, I'm a Diana and I'm 45.
Heres my story.
My cousins used to delight in saying Die Anna. And laughing hystericaly. I got called Diana Banana.
I only remember meeting one other Diana, and a couple of Dianes, when I started working.
(Hate when people call me Diane, cant help myself finishing off with a very loud A and it pisses me off no end when someone takes the time to email me or reply to an email with Dear Diane)

Anyway, I remember when Charles and Diana got engaged.
My life became hellish (well, I was a teenager, didn't have anything else to worry about Grin ). Anyone who knew me started calling me Lady Di, asking me Hows Charlie. We had friends with a red setter called Charlie, that caused no end of mirth. Then it changed to Princess Di.
And for as long as she was alive, I couldnt mention my name without someone making the association. My name became someone elses.

Then when she died...
Mother of God, I know its sad when someone is killed tragically, but If I said "my name is Diana", the response was "Isn't it terrible, wasn't it awful etc etc.
I wish she had been called Jane or Helen, anything but my name.
I get called Di by my friends.
Still though, to this day, someone will say Princess Di if I mention my name. Especially to non english people. She did truly touch the world.
Didnt do much for my world though except to annoy me.

I wouldnt wish it on a tiny precious baby girl.

MortifiedAdams · 28/05/2013 09:53

But Diana isnt a royal name. She wasnt royal when she was named Hmm

CairoPrankster · 28/05/2013 10:05

IamDiana thank you, I have dabbed away my tear Grin.

Mortified I know but she was and still is one of the most enduring public figures.

Its not a terribly name, Diana was the goddess of the hunt so a good strong name for a girl really.

I'm a Diane, born in 1981 (year of Charles and Di's wedding). My mum picked it because she liked it and got a bit annoyed if people asked she named me that because of Princess Di.

I have never met another Diane or Diana my age. Anyone i've met with those names have tended to be about 20 years older than me.

IamDiana · 28/05/2013 10:12

Thanks Cairo Grin

It is a lovely strong woman's name.
Just too many associations with the princess of hearts. [vom]
Anyway.
Oh God, I've just remembered something else awful.
When I was at school, I had a weekend job in a restaurant. The maitre d' ( a short fat balding rude man) used to serenade me with this: just changing the lyrics slightly. (swapping old for young)

Earnshaw · 28/05/2013 10:13

I think any sensible parent might have felt that the name had become too 'big' for a little baby to carry, but there did seem to be a lot of people around in 1997 who weren't entirely sensible about her - some of them must have been pregnant!

Oblomov · 28/05/2013 10:15

I an not keen on the name Diana.
The lady Di association has practically killed it off.

Earnshaw · 28/05/2013 10:15

Any name ending in '-anna' gets the 'banana' or 'spanner' treatment at sometime, IamDiana, if that helps at all.

JumpingJackSprat · 28/05/2013 10:15

I like the name but after the goddess not the princess. id never give a baby the name for the same reasons quoted by the real life diana up thread! I think calling a baby diana now would make everyone think youre a devout royalist.

IamDiana · 28/05/2013 10:27

Oh I know Earnshaw, sometimes its nice to have a rant.
My family dont quite understand the absolute rage I get about the whole thing, so I keep it inside in case they think I've lost the plot. A little venting is a good thing. Grin

Turniptwirl · 28/05/2013 19:39

I think there aren't any other famous Dianas to dilute the princess di effect. Like there are other Elizabeth's and chatleses but I can't think of any other dianas apart from the goddess. Plus i don't think it's a particularly pretty name and I would associate it with older middle aged women more than a lovely little girl

CairoPrankster · 29/05/2013 12:00

Since staring this thread yesterday I have actually come round to the name. Take away the Princess Di association and it is starting to sound quite nice. shame no more babies for me

I know a gorgeous 2year old called Diana. I must admit to being a little surprised when her name was announced as i think it is rather dated and not due a revival for another generation at least. Having said that, the Diana I know is adorable and I can't imagine her being called anything else now.
