Naomi. Very pretty and rarely heard.

TenthMuse · 28/05/2013 12:58

I like Elodie, but I'm coming across more and more recently, and suspect it is getting popular. Naomi is nice and underused. Both go well with Grace. The others are too popular for my taste, except Noemie which I think would constantly be confused with Naomi anyway!

SgtTJCalhoun · 28/05/2013 12:59

Elodie. Had it short listed for dd.

AmIGoingMad · 28/05/2013 16:54

Yes think that Noemie's off the list now as I can see that dd could end up getting frustrated by it. I do still think its a pretty name though but may be hard work in the UK.

Ella or Sophie. I like them both.

AmIGoingMad · 28/05/2013 20:52

I keep changing my mind at the moment! One min it's between Elodie and Naomi then Ella and Sophie creep back in! DH likes them all too! Aargh!

Love Sophie! And like Ella and Sophia.

Not so keen on the others.

HorryIsUpduffed · 28/05/2013 21:37

I don't like Ella at all (except as a diminutive) and Emily should be spelt with a -y, but apart from that it is a good list.

Noemie will be frequently misspelled or mispronounced though. I knew one at school.

AmIGoingMad · 29/05/2013 08:40

I know that Emilie is usually spelt with a y here but liked this spelling as I'm a bit of a Francophile and therefor liked the link with France. The only thing that puts me off though is our daughter needing to spell her name lots. Although I have a traditional name which has two well accepted spellings and have to spell mine lots too.

I would also say that there is a difference between a name with well known variants - like if I met a Jane I would check whether it had a 'y' and if I met a Claire I would check about an 'i' - and a name like Emily which people will almost invariably assume that they know how to spell, so you have to jump in and correct them.

My favourite is Naomi. The others are fine, but they don't jump out at me.

AmIGoingMad · 29/05/2013 08:54

I see your point Amanda. I hadn't thought of it like that but the way you explained it makes total sense.

And thanks for opinion on the list! Naomi was the last in the mix and not sure where it came from but it's a definite contender at the moment Smile

Using the French spelling is unremarkable if your family is French, but a bit odd otherwise IMHO.

Naomi is great though - that perfect but elusive combination of "everyone is familiar with it" and "hardly anyone seems to be called it".

rrreow · 29/05/2013 15:00

Elodie and Noemie are my favourites. I'm not sure how Noemie would be pronounced by English speaking people though. noEmie or noemIE (I would pronounce it the latter way I think)

curiousgeorgie · 29/05/2013 17:19

Ella Grace or Elodie Grace are beautiful :)

Emilie (though spelt differently) is soooo popular if that bothers you?

TheRealFellatio · 29/05/2013 17:25

I don't love any of them, but Elodie or Sophie would be my choice.

Elodie will become quite popular in the next five years I think, and so far is pretty unusual, whereas Sophie is a lovely classic which is over its recent peak and can safely be chosen again without fear of there being 3 in the class.

jamtoast12 · 29/05/2013 17:28

Every second child is Ellie or Ella so I'd avoid them... Even Elodie for the same reason as very likely to be shortened. The only one I like is Naomi but even as an adult I have to double check how to spell it!

Grace is equally very popular if that bothers you. Most girls now have Grace or May as a middle name.

Weegiemum · 29/05/2013 17:30

I like Sophie and Naomi - also I like the Spanish version Nohemi.

With the things your choosing I'd also consider - Elaine, Elena, Louise/a

AmIGoingMad · 29/05/2013 19:30

Interesting points to be considered. I don't think I'm massively bothered by popularity but then when I think about it I wouldn't want Dd to be one of lots in her class with same name.
