It's the hormones isn't it?

DD is due today and DH and I have more or less settled on naming her Margaret Rose. (We'd call her Maggie.) I wanted a flower/spring type name in there and also my much-missed grandfather grew roses and they remind me of him. However, my mother hates Rose as it's her sister's name and they don't speak.

Anyway. If she's not born by Monday, I'm going in to have my water broken and move things along. Monday is our version of Remembrance Day and so...I've suddenly become obsessed with calling the baby Poppy. Blush I would probably use it as a nickname for Penelope because I think it's a bit twee for a grownup.

I:m not extremely pro military or anything but I do appreciate the sacrifice and bravery of people who've died for something they believe in, and my rose growing grandfather was a veteran. Also here people use Memorial Day to honor other loved ones who have died. It's just starting to get nice out and people go to the cemeteries and plant new flowers, etc. It's sort of nice actually.

However. I think I am just caught up in the symbolism of the day...or am I? Hormones have rendered me incapable of rational thought. :o Sorry this is so long...thoughts?

Oh and I have thought of just using Margaret Poppy but I don't think they really flow. :(

Margaret Penelope
Poppy Rose

I like your idea. Might be hormones, but I love it when there is a story behind why you picked a name.

Was due yesterday, but nothing much happening...

MissPricklePants · 23/05/2013 19:10

Poppy is a great name

Chocoflump · 23/05/2013 19:13

I love poppy!

noblegiraffe · 23/05/2013 19:13

Hormones. If it were Christmas you'd suddenly be taken with Holly. Using your child's name to commemorate the war dead is a bit weird. Wink

Bowlersarm · 23/05/2013 19:18

Had you the name Maggie in mind for long? Sometimes I think you can be thinking of a name for so long it can become a bit 'stale' for want of a better word, so you move onto another one.

Obviously this generally happens up to when the baby is born because then the name just is the baby.

Not too late to change your mind though...

CPtart · 23/05/2013 19:18

Poppy is dreadful. Stick with Margaret.

DessieLou · 23/05/2013 19:21

Hormones, definately. I seem to recall you settled on Maggie quite some time ago so I'd stick with what you've been saying all along. Margaret Rose is lovely. I like Penelope but I agree poppy is a bit twee for an adult. Stick with the original (rational) plan or you may regret it.

CheerfulYank · 23/05/2013 19:36

Okay, I'm sure it's hormones. :o DH will be relieved...

I much prefer Maggie. Margaret Rose is a lovely elegant name.

Safmellow · 23/05/2013 20:32

I love Penelope. But the best advice I can give you is to wait till you meet your LO and see what 'fits'. Good luck :)

Heavywheezing · 23/05/2013 20:37

I like like both Margaret and poppy.
Yes, see what fits.

Have you thought about rosemary? For remembrance, as Shakespeare would say.

PoppyAmex · 23/05/2013 20:40

I think I was in your other thread and I'm sure I said this before, but I love Margaret Rose.

It's classic, elegant and not very common these days.

FetaCheeny · 23/05/2013 20:50

I prefer Margaret but I think a child of this generation would prefer Poppy, which is something people don't always consider. Maggie Rose is so cute though, either way, win win.

CheerfulYank · 23/05/2013 20:52

Funny Deb! :)

Now I want to know who you are... Confused

What about Penelope Margaret?

pygmy · 24/05/2013 16:06

I absolutely love the name Poppy, and as a nickname for Penelope, it is divine!!

Personally, I'd much rather be a Poppy than a Maggie.

diddl · 24/05/2013 17:10

I've always thought of Margaret as really old fashioned.

I'm nearly 50 & a girl in my school year at secondary was called it & I thought it was dated then!

Much prefer Poppy.

Like Penelope as well.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 24/05/2013 17:17

It's a lovely thought but if DH is less than keen and you yourself suspect hormones, stick with Maggie Rose.

PS Any update?
PPS Thanks for MNers expecting this weekend.

CheerfulYank · 24/05/2013 21:17

Poppy and Maggie/Margaret are equally unusual here in the States...still not sure what we'll do!

No sign of baby yet...we'll see what the weekend brings.

Maggie is MILES nicer than Poppy.

MILES I tell you!

Thinkingpositively · 24/05/2013 21:57

I love Maggie!! It is brave but i think it'll be a name that a girl can wear for herself........go for it!!

CheerfulYank · 25/05/2013 04:57

I do like Maggie and think it'll "fit in" with all the Maddie/Gracie/Ellie etc names around here, but will be more unusual and she'll have Margaret to fall back on. :)
