We named our DD Isla (1yr) and now although I've only met one other Isla I am frequently told 'oh I know an Isla'.

I really didn't want her to have a name like Oscar or Alfie that becomes incredibly popular for 5/10 years to the extent that it almost ruins the name.

Am I being ridiculous? Is it really, REALLY popular?! I'm fine with it being a name that's heard of and not really unusual but not crazily popular. I'm feeling at the moment like I actually really regret giving her the name. Is it so bad??

And sorry, but I know numerous Islas, ranging from less than a year to 22.

I've never met one in the six years since I had ds1.

I have an unusual name, that no one can pronounce or spell!! I gave my DD quite an unusual name 14 years ago, but today there are loads of them around. I couldn't care less. It's the name I knew was hers the moment I saw her, and it suits her perfectly.

A teacher at her old primary school stopped me in the street and said she named her DD after mine, because she loved the name so much.

Just goes to show, as I suspected, I have great taste!!

The only way you'll get a unique name is if you make one up.

Surely you have more important things to worry about.

P.S BTW I love Alfie!

I know a couple of little Isla's.

But the number of Isla's won't be evenly spread out across the UK, so you're not necessarily going to be falling over them.

And FWIW, DS has a top 10 name, we've met a fair number of boys around his age with the same name (including another 2 in the toddler room at his nursery), and no-one has ever said to me "Oh, I know a (DS's name)", despite it being statistically likely that just about everyone has met someone with DS's name. So I wouldn't get too hung up about people telling you that they know an Isla.

YANBU to be annoyed, but don't regret it because it's a brilliant name.

My DC has one of those names which was rare when I named him (to the point where I got Hmm looks, but it's now incredibly popular. Yes, I am pissed off about it, but I don't regret giving him the name because it really suits him, and is a lovely name. And I chose it first. So ner!

I gave DC1 a top 5 baby name.....it never bothered me that there was another child with the same name in his class, what did I expect?

IslaMann · 24/05/2013 22:23

I love it. But then I would .... Grin

pascalia · 25/05/2013 01:48

It is really popular

Splatt34 · 25/05/2013 07:39

my Isla is 2 & 1/2. I don't even think it was on the top 100 list we looked at when I was pregnant with her. There is another in her nursery room and I do hear it now & again.

I really couldn't give a monkeys. I couldn't imagine her being called anything else.

DH wants Oliver if current bump is a boy. I said but it's really popular, he said so? He's right!

LynetteScavo · 25/05/2013 09:52

I've just checked baby names for 2012. My DD's name is right up there. Her middle name isn't even in the 20 100, and they were both around 50 when I named her. I liked both names equally....maybe I should have gone with her middle name.....just goes to show you don't know which way a name will go...

amandine07 · 26/05/2013 09:48

Chill out, if you like it and it suits her, surely that's all that matters?

Trying to work out "which way a name will go" is waste of time, surely there are more interesting things to think about in life?!

RosinaCopper · 26/05/2013 09:58

My age is easily guessed from my name, which was popular at the time but isn't now. I was one of three girls with this name in the infants class at my very small village primary school (60 ish children in school, so roughly 20 per class).

I very rarely meet anyone with this name now. So I would agree with posters who say that as long as you love it and it suits her, please don't be gutted that you're hearing of other girls with the same name. In the big scheme of things, having a fairly popular name isn't so bad and will probably matter less as she gets older.

amessagetoyouYoni · 27/05/2013 12:58

Its a very popular name. It is also very lovely.

I did the same thing...unwittingly gave my daughter a pretty but zeitgeisty name. Dont sweat it. Its obviously popular because its gorgeous.
