Need to make a decision

We have got down to 2 final names for DS who is now 3 days old. We are stuck between Ted (which would be his whole name, ie. not a shortening unless someone can think of a long version that doesn't start with "Ed") & Hector.

Really torn... which do people prefer?

Oh well

evamummy · 20/05/2013 21:30

The op has asked for opinions on two names, one of which is Hector. We're all just offering our opinions and it seems that some of us ARE put off by the negative meaning. Others aren't. That's ok - no need to get so defensive about it.

Another thing that puts me off Hector is the lack of obviously nice nicknames - Heck? Hecky?

Congratulations, op, by the way!

Decoy · 20/05/2013 21:39

But the name Hector doesn't have a negative meaning because 1) it derives from a different word than the verb "to hector" and 2) the verb "to hector" doesn't mean "to bully".

evamummy · 20/05/2013 21:54

That may all be correct but I still think of hector as in bully when I see or hear the name Hector. Names are very subjective and Hector just conjures up that image. But feel free to ignore my opinion Smile.

poppydaisy · 20/05/2013 22:02

Congratulations, op. I prefer Ted, nickname Teddy. I'm not keen on the sound of Heck/Hector, nor its meaning.

LogonMounstuart · 20/05/2013 22:03

I like the name Hector. But I can't get past its associations. It is a word I use and that I hear used on occasion to mean to bully or harass.

I also think of the character Hector from the play the History Boys which doesn't endear me to the name either...

milkymocha · 20/05/2013 22:12

Ted (or theodore!) definitely not Hector.

Congratulations OP.

poppydaisy · 20/05/2013 22:12

"the verb "to hector" doesn't mean "to bully"."

According to our dictionary, to hector means:
To intimidate or dominate in a blustering way.

Not that different from to bully imo.

oscarandelliesdad · 20/05/2013 22:15

twentyfourcarat · 23/05/2013 11:31

Theodore, Teodor, Theobald, Thaddeus, Tedmond/Tedmund, Thibaud or just Ted! Love it!

miffybun73 · 24/05/2013 11:46

Theodore (Ted)

pygmy · 24/05/2013 11:48

Have you decided yet? Hector is top of my list today!
