Thoughts please.

I think Cosmo is a fantastic name - cool, easy to prounounce/spell, works in most languages and overused - what's not to like?

Those of you who'd laugh at a name like Cosmo - why? I genuinely don't get that. Do you really find someone's name 'snortable'? I find that quite sad, actually.

I don't normally post on this forum but think Cosmo is a great name and goes perfectly with your last name.

Don't listen to the naysayers. Cosmo Black is perfect for an adult or a child. As for it being upper class so what? Better than a chav name, shudders.

My son is called Cosmo, so obviously I am biased, but I love it. DH is Italian and Cosmo has Greek/Italian origins which are very apt for us. FIL is called Cosimo (which is a more old-fashioned name). Cosmo is also the patron saint of doctors.

I really don't care what anyone thinks when I shout his name across the playground and nor should you. It's a fab name.

It's such a great name.

It just makes me think of the women's magazine. Which can be a bit smutty - "how to make your man cum with a doughnut" was an actual article piece on the front cover once.

Oriunda - I was going to say everything you've just written! I have a Cosmo, also named after a family member, and people always comment on how much they (genuinely) like it.

I find it really odd when strangers on the Internet say that someone's choice of name is 'pretentious'. Surely pretentious means trying to be something you're not? Without knowing someone's heritage, social circles and general way of being, how can you possibly say its pretentious?! It might be for YOU, but not for people who are NOT you. And as for the expression 'try hard' ... you bloody should try hard when its your kid. (Although I draw the line at making names up!).

Cosmo is a name with great history, links to Greek, Italian, Russian & Scottish heritage (if any of those apply & if its important to you) and - in my opinion - sounds ace.

As with any name, other associations go out the window once you've given it to your kid, so I wouldn't worry about magazines etc. you can associate any name if you really want to. Who cares.

And Cosmo Brown is awesome!

If dd had been ds she would have been Cosmos, Cosmo for short.

I grew up in a shitty council estate with a smack problem and my mates dad was called Cosmo.

Cosmo Black does kind of remind me of Conrad Black, and IMHO that's not so good?

The kids in his school aren't going to get either of those connotations though, so not really a problem I wouldn't have thought?

Great if you are very wealthy and from upper class/upper middle class background, Prep school etc.

However if little Cosmo goes to the local primary school unfortunately he is likely to be ridiculed.

Why on earth would little boys care whether their mates are called Cayden, Cosmo, Mohammed or Connor? Honestly, they don't care - to them they're just names! Also, what is there to ridicule about? It's not like his name is Will that could be ridiculed with Willy, for example.

Don't underestimate the ability of primary-aged children to tease and ridicule others for being "posh".

Cosmo Black is absolutely fantastic!

I love the sound of the name and we talked about using it for DS. However, anyone I mentioned it to in real life after naming DS something else laughed and thought I was joking. It is a lovely name though. Cosmo and Dibs were cool. I also like Cosimo, it reminds me of a character in an Italian novel who lives in the trees after getting fed up with his family (not because they named him Cosimo, although he is a Baron!). In conclusion, go with it if you love it, but be prepared for the odd raised eyebrow.

pretentious is my word for it.

personally I don't think the child would be ridiculed by other children, maybe their parents.
