Aurelia or Arya?

afrikat · 11/05/2013 16:23

My DH loves Aurelia but I think it may be a bit 'fancy' and difficult for a child to pronounce. I thought Arya could be an alternative.

Opinions? Or what else should we consider?

Yes Aurelia is very hard to pronounce. Which means that I can't pronounce it.

I like Arya, although I think it will rise in popularity due to GofT.

Aurelia is such a beautiful name. If I had a dd3 it is the name I would use. Arya is in my opinion not nearly as lovely. Smile

meditrina · 11/05/2013 16:33

I'm afraid when I saw Arya, I thought Aryan and I wouldn't use a name with such resonances.

Aurelia, was in a film I watched recently - cant remember what though sorry.

afrikat · 11/05/2013 16:38

Ooh I didn't think of Aryan similarity - probably strikes that off the list!

Was it Love Actually dolomites? That's where we heard it :)

I'm with meditrina... Arya instantly made me think of Aryan and I'm not even too familiar with the word and the issues but it has instant negative connotations (for me). Sorry.
I do love Aurelia though!
How about

Aurora
Ariel?

Or my personal favourite;

Athena (love this so much)

DolomitesDonkey · 11/05/2013 17:19

Afrikat, absolutely right! Grin I knew I'd heard it pronounced by a non-English speaker and it had sounded beautiful. Perhaps not so much if you live in Bootle. Wink

sleepingbeautiful · 11/05/2013 17:42

How about Aria? It's a legitimate non-game-of-thrones name, with both Hebrew and Italian (musical) origins.

tilder · 11/05/2013 19:08

I never get the appeal of the name aurelia. To me its a jellyfish. Sorry.

Love the name arya. I would assume game of thrones as well. Was it a name in its own right before GoT?

Decoy · 11/05/2013 20:38

Aurelia is lovely and I also like the suggestions of Aurora and Aria. Amelia or Arianna?

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 11/05/2013 20:43

Aurelia is lovely.

Throughgrittedteeth · 11/05/2013 20:44

Aurelia is a character in Love Actually Smile it's a beautiful name

Throughgrittedteeth · 11/05/2013 20:45

How do you pronounce Arya?

Throughgrittedteeth · 11/05/2013 20:46

Xpost with everyone Blush

DonDrapersAltrEgoBigglesDraper · 12/05/2013 01:57

Arya is such a nothing name. Not familiar with Game of Thrones.

Aurelia is beautiful, on the other hand.

Homebird8 · 12/05/2013 02:20

You could spell Ayra 'Eira'. Welsh for snow! Said the same I think.

glorious · 12/05/2013 07:56

Aurelia. I know how to say that but not Arya!

picnicbasketcase · 12/05/2013 08:05

Pronounced like Aria, I think it's pretty, but I'm not so keen on the way they pronounce it in GoT, which is more like 'Are-ya', like 'are ya going out'. Aurelia seems more like a real name, less trendy IYSWIM.

diddl · 12/05/2013 09:27

Aurelia-lovely!

Arianna?

DolomitesDonkey · 12/05/2013 09:35

Ayla? Pronounced eye-la.

hbmeic · 12/05/2013 11:47

Aurelia reminds me of nipples (Areola).

Anya is lovely.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 12/05/2013 11:52

Aurelia is beautiful. I also thought aryan when I saw your list.

hbmeic · 12/05/2013 12:05

Aryan Really? The Nazi connection.
