This is our first boy and we are finding boys' names impossible. Things are made harder by the fact our DCs also want a say. Here is our short list with my thoughts:

Freddie (Frederick or Wilfred): a family name. DH and the kids like it, I'm worried its a bit comic.

Arthur: DH's fav. The nicknames of Artie and Art make me think of an ageing US door to door salesman. Also worried this is a very 2013 name.

Felix: my fav and the DCs love but DH says its wimpy. He also points out I shorten all names and there is no good nn for Felix.

Max (Maximillian): DCs' fav. I like. DH says its a dig's name.

Sacha (Alexander): I love, DCs cry at the thought as say its too feminine.

Jacob: safe, fine, nobody objects. I'm not terribly keen on Jake though.

we'd be going for Max if it weren't my FIL's name (MIL would be too upset)

Alexander can be shortened to Sandy too, which is always good.

IfNotNowThenWhen · 04/05/2013 10:27

You can totally be a male Sacha! I like it. And Alexander. And Xander.

Felix-the cat
Max-the Dog
Arthur-pooed his pants during the reception carol concert. (True fact)
Freddie-Starr
Jacob-fine.

Your welcome Grin

KittenofDoom · 04/05/2013 11:40

Frederick because it offers him the most choice. Freddie, Fred or Rick, Ricky are all possible shortenings that may suit him as he goes through life. (Hate Wilfred though)

Alexander for the same reason.

I like the other names, but think they are either too catty, doggy or "now".

shockedballoon · 04/05/2013 11:49

I have an Alexander, shortened to Xander Smile

Other than that, I would choose Jacob or Freddie/Fred short for Frederick.

DejaB00 · 04/05/2013 12:11

Love Sacha, and Arthur too, but you're right, it's climbing up the charts way too fast!

Snazzynewyear · 04/05/2013 12:17

Freddie (Frederick) or Max. I like Alexander but not Sascha. Arthur is a good middle name.

And the other DC don't get a deciding vote! Tell them they get to do that when they have their own kids Wink

fussychica · 04/05/2013 12:57

Jacob or Alexander for me.

Please not Wilfred - agree with Jennyre Wilf & Arthur or as I call them "old man up the pub names"Grin

Jaskla · 04/05/2013 13:09

I like Jacob and Max. With Maximilian you can also shorten to Maxi.

I prefer Xander as a shorter version of Alexander though and agree with others in assuming Sacha would be a girl (I know a few dogs called Sasha).

Really don't like Felix as I just think of Felix the cat.

Arthur and Freddie are just ok to me but I don't like Wilfred and think if you were to tell people his full name he would get Wilf rather than Freddie.

I know these 'old man' names are coming back around but I think it'll take a few years before I can think of them without an old man automatically popping into my head.

HeffalumpTheFlump · 04/05/2013 17:53

I like freddie best, sorry felix will forever be a cat to me!! I like sascha tho!

Artichook · 04/05/2013 20:23

Thanks everyone. It seems that Freddie and Max are the most popular in our list. Then Arthur and Jacob and lastly Felix. I kind of agree that Alexander is out as I really can't use Alex and Al.

DH has just suggested a late contender of Jude which I quite like. Although I am mystified that a man who thinks Sacha is too feminine would consider Jude.

Rhubarbgarden · 04/05/2013 23:05

Personally, I love Sacha. MN does make me laugh though - whenever it is suggested for a boy, everyone cries 'girl's name!' and whenever it's suggested for a girl, the protestations are 'boy's name!'

Failing that, Wildred nn Freddie. I don't find it comedic.

CheesyPoofs · 04/05/2013 23:13

I like Frederick best.

Mutteroo · 05/05/2013 10:37

Love Sacha for a boy & I had this on my short list many moons ago. DH felt it was too feminine. I've yet to meet a male or female Sacha/Sasha so for me I have no preconceptions.

Never liked Frederick because it was my DH's real name. He also hated it & aged 18 selected his own name. Only his mum & sister called him Fred. Ask me now what I think of the name because I love it! I'm hoping one of my DC honour my dad as I quite like the idea of a grandson named Freddie.

Jacob was on our list, but has been done to death now.

Only ever met one Maximilian who was a spoilt little brat thanks to his over-indulging parents. Only ever met one Max & it was a dog.

Felix is a cat's name. Say no more

Wilfred - NO! Reminds me of an old man I met once when I was a kid who I later found out had abused my friend. Appreciate there are some decent Wilfred's about, however, the name is tainted for me.

Arthur - If you go to our local park, you'll hear plenty of adults calling "Arthur!" & either a 6 year old comes running or a dog bounds over.

Ultimately it's not important what any of us think because this is your baby & your choice. Fun to join in though & I hope the remaining pregnancy goes swimmingly & you pick Freddie or Sacha :))

Graceparkhill · 05/05/2013 10:44

How about Alexander with Sandy for short?

ItsallisnowaFeegle · 05/05/2013 10:53

I have a 20 week old DS, Jude. It's an awesome name, however, I find we catch ourselves calling him Judey Shock We really must stop.

Jude is, quite obviously, the best name from your list. Alexander and Max are great too.

Laquila · 05/05/2013 10:53

Wilfred and Frederick are both lovely.

Arthur - I like this, and don't think it's too 2013, but I'm not overly keen on Art or Artie.

Max/Maximilian/Maxim - love these, classic and cool

Felix - this used to be one of my favourites, but everyone always seems to mention bloody cat food. Also, agree that it doesn't have a natural nickname.

Sacha - not keen, unless you're Russian, and I think most people will assume it's a girl's name. I do love Alexander though.

Jacob - lovely, but also bemoan lack of nickname. (Although suggestion of Coby upthread is good - I have a nephew named Cobe and he's adorable, so am biased)

Also, you might like Theo, Isaac, Rory, Gilbert, Corin, Gabriel.

Good luck!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/05/2013 10:55

LOVE Frederick and like Wilfred, like Fred but hate Freddie. Don't like Arthur, Sacha and really dislike Felix. Jacob and Max are nice but a bit dull, maybe?

ben5 · 05/05/2013 10:57

Arthur, Jacob, Alexander or Max in that order would be my choice
Felix just reminds me of a cat
Freddie reminds me of Freddie Star, drugs rock and roll and all that sliey stuff!!
Sacha no

QuantitativePleasing · 05/05/2013 11:19

Freddie (Frederick or Wilfred): family association is the only thing that saves this

Arthur: hate it

Felix: love it

Max (Maximillian): Love it

Sacha (Alexander): Sacha is too feminine , how about Xander?

Jacob: i agree with your definition.

What about:

marcus

samuel

ZolaBuddleia · 05/05/2013 11:29

Love both Jude and Arthur, not keen on the rest at all.

MummyBurrows · 05/05/2013 13:39

Freddie-i like if short for Frederick, not Wilfred, but given the current allegations against Freddie Starr it is perhaps poor timing to name a child that...

Arthur-way too popular right now but I'm personally not a fan of the current "old lady/old man" name trend anyway so I'd say no even if it wasn't as popular as it currently is lol

Felix-brand of cat food and generally a name for a cat,not a child imo

Max-it is a dogs name, usually belonging to labradors and alsations in my experience (I've met 5 dogs called Max but not a single child) but Maximillian is much better and doesn't make me think "dog"...that probably doesn't help...

Sacha-nice in its own right, but its not a nn for Alexander in my opinion. I do like Alexander but nn would be Alex...

Jacob-lovely name but very popular right now, mainly due to the Twilight films/books.

Out of the list I would opt for Sacha or Alexander or maybe Jacob,if current popularity doesn't bother you :)

dinnersinthedawg · 05/05/2013 23:54

I have a Jacob and I love his name (obviously!). I have only met one other so far (he's 2.6) but I guess it depends where you are as to how popular it is.

GW297 · 05/05/2013 23:57

Max

Leafmould · 06/05/2013 01:22

Wilfred gets my vote.

LittleMissLucy · 06/05/2013 01:33

I'd go for Freddie Arthur or Frederick Arthur.
