Dh doesn't like it. And, it is way out from all the girls names I usually like....but I just can't get it out of my head. Think It's classically (sp?) beautiful.

(Not even pg yet btw...just musing!)

I think of it as a male name.

I know a lovely (female) Meredith aged 20. Great name - classy and feminine without being too girly! Smile

Love it! (but would probably go for the Welsh spelling) Love Meri for short and have only heard it as a girls name where I live (South Wales), though I have heard others say it is traditionally a male name.

Personally I am moving slightly toward Meryn instead though as I do worry that people may associate the name with the murder - although I'm sure people you know would soon come to only associate it with your daughter, and that issue would fade.

I know a gorgeous little girl called Meredith, nicknamed Merry. It totally suits her. The parents are Welsh, so it clearly isn't always a male name in Wales!

It doesn't make me think of that awful case, I don't really understand that argument. For any name there are bound to have been/will be in the future, other people, with good or bad associations, with that name.

For example, I know a Jamie, the name doesn't make me think of the Jamie Bulger case. I know several little Madeleines, it doesn't make me think of Madeleine McCann. The name Rose doesn't remind me of Rose West. Etc etc....

It made the final 2 name choices for our DD and we ended up using it as middle name. She is Zoe Meredith Rose. Whenever we tell people it gets a favourable reaction, unusual but pretty.

I love it, but one of my favourite names is edith. meri or edie as a nickname

I like the name but it makes me think Kerchner.

sashh · 24/04/2013 08:18

Kercher, not Kerchner. Poor woman I can't even spell her name right.

I think it's a beautiful name, I know a little Meredith (Merry). Surprised at the mixed reaction on here.

I love it - also love Rhiannon.

It's lovely.

I've only ever seen the actual Welsh spelling, Meredydd, used on men/ as a surname. It's also pronounced slightly differently.

I love it, was on our shortlist for DD2 (we went with Penelope in the end)
I do know a male Meredith but I wouldn't let that put you off.

I have a Meredith, nn Merry. The only thing that bugs me is that lots of people think she's called Mary Hmm. Although I'm sure that will change once she starts school.

I had the name on my list for a long time, before Meredith Kercher was tragically in the news. To me it felt wrong to not use it just because something bad happened to someone with the same name.

It was my grandmother's name, and she was generally known as Merry. Which she wasn't, very (merry, I mean, character-wise), but that's the risk you run. I have to say aside from that I quite like it as a name. I think a Meredith could do anything, go anywhere.

I used to hate this name - made me think of some old witch not a beautiful little baby but I've come full circle and actually love it.

I wouldn't bother about the likelihood of people thinking of the Meredith kercher story as once the name is linked to your daughter that is the most prominent that springs to mind. I know a Myra and had to have it pointed out to me that she unfortunately shares her names with Hindley!

Will see if I can work on dh

Do be aware that there is going to be a third trial for the murder of Meredith Kercher so there may be some publicity.

Although the last publicity seemed to ignore the poor woman in favor of the alleged murderers.
