Sander

I've always loved the Dutch boy's name Sander but don't think I'd ever use it outside of the Netherlands. Both due to pronunciation and the fact it might be perceived as no different to Painter, Joiner or Plumber which don't appeal!

I'm right aren't I? No getting around that is there?

I'm afraid you are, BrieMonster, sorry!

AuntieStella · 19/04/2013 12:04

You could try Alexander with nn Sandy or Xander?

BrieMonster · 19/04/2013 12:04

Yeah. I could move I suppose!

Is it pronounced like Xander?

Is Zander a name? Or a fish?

dementedma · 19/04/2013 20:43

Zander not uncommon here in Scotland

barnet · 19/04/2013 20:45

Not Sander...
But Xander is gorgeous!

ArabellaBeaumaris · 19/04/2013 20:50

I thought it was Scottish.

Bowlersarm · 19/04/2013 20:50

Alexander nn Xander

SugarMiceInTheRain · 19/04/2013 20:52

I love Xander (as a nn for Alexander) and was tempted to use it myself. But not Sander at all, sorry.

Jacksterbear · 19/04/2013 20:55

Sander =a power tool! Try googling it...

Xander I like.

BrieMonster · 19/04/2013 21:19

I do like Xander. Just a totally different name. Sander's pronounced more like Sunder.. Although depending on your accent that might be totally incorrect.

I know when I'm beaten though and without a glimmer of hope I'll bin that one again.

Xander is really nice, but Sander would be pronounced wrongly.

TheYamiOfYawn · 20/04/2013 15:32

Alexander on the birth certificate but call him Sander?

CruCru · 21/04/2013 22:55

I know a Sander. I think it is quite a normal name, particularly if one or more of the parents are foreign.

HagsFlungOut · 22/04/2013 01:08

Don't know if this is any help, but there used to be an actor called Sandor Eles. I think he was Hungarian by birth.

crazydrunkevilhamster · 22/04/2013 01:19

It depends how you would pronounce the 's' because if I saw 'sander' wrote down I would pronounce it 'xander'
Btw I much prefer this spelling of 'Xandur' as its pretty rare & the pronunciation is different , more Oomph on the 'U' lol iyswim

YouDontWinFriendsWithSalad · 22/04/2013 02:46

Fairly normal name where I'm from (English speaking country). No one has ever confused any of the Sander's I've known with a power tool.

BrieMonster · 22/04/2013 07:18

Oooh fab. So you all love it too! (I read what I like into these posts..)
