Stina?

Still got ages to go but already struggling with names. DH seems to think we'll be calling a girl Stina. I like it, but I'm a little unsure about about how it might be received. We're both drawn to Scandi names even though we have no particular connections, not that that stopped us from calling DS2 Magnus (although we are Scottish and it was inspired by our holidays in Orkney). Stina is usually short for Christina I think, but I'm not keen on that. Any thoughts? Does anyone know any Stinas?

I would presume it was short for Christina.

I'm not keen on it, but I'm not keen on Stella either, but it doesn't really matter what I like!

I love Magnus, btw.

Love this name. We considered for our DD as we have a Swedish / European heritage to both immediate families. We also like Stina Nordstrom's music v much and it holds lovely associations.

But then I pointed out that our alcoholic neighbour Christina might think we named DD after her - it was a no go after that sadly.

If you have a Magnus already definitely go for a Stina

Manoodledo · 16/04/2013 20:42

Stella is also on our list of possibles. Sorry Stina was spoiled for you by your neighbour liger. Can I be nosey and ask what you did call your DD? I'm very much looking for inspiration at the moment.

I'd assume Stina was short for Christina, so wouldn't use it as a stand-alone name. Stella works very well on its own and goes well with Magnus.

liger · 16/04/2013 20:52

We had Astrid and Stella on the list in terms of Scandi names, there were numerous other names in the mix. In the end she became Elsa, and has a middle name of Erika after her Grandmother and a second middle name which has meaning for us - Saba . Lots of S's and A's! I've mixed up the order of the middle names so it won't google so easily ( paranoid !)

My friend is called Stina, she is from Denmark originally and is very glam, she has a very popular beauty blog. I think its a lovely name!

DamselWithADulcimer · 16/04/2013 20:59

I assumed it was Ernestina. Is that any better?

KittenOfDoom · 16/04/2013 21:03

Justina
Augustina

Manoodledo · 16/04/2013 21:05

Thanks Liger. Astrid is also on our list. Elsa is lovely.

Wow, Ernestina, hadn't thought of that one....

Actually, I like Justine, but DH doesn't.

Apologies to Stina Nordenstam for attempting to get her name right one handed on a phone!

AuntPittypat · 16/04/2013 21:13

My favourite Scandinavian name is Ingrid. Just love it. Can't get DH to agree though (and I'm not actually pregnant so it's all hypothetical anyway!).

I do like Stina. Like Damsel, my first thought was that it'd be short for Ernestina.

TolliverGroat · 16/04/2013 21:17

Magnus was first runner-up for DS's name, and Astrid was joint runner-up for DD2's name, so I clearly love both of them. Stina I'm less wild about, but it's perfectly fine.

forevergreek · 16/04/2013 21:20

It's nice. But on first looks I thought it was pronounced 'stin-a'

Meringue33 · 16/04/2013 21:23

Astrid is such a gorgeous name. Goes really well with Magnus too.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 16/04/2013 21:23

I know of a family with Britt, Magnus and Inga.

Also love Astrid.

girliefriend · 16/04/2013 21:29

don't like it, its not at all pretty.

KittenOfDoom · 16/04/2013 21:45

have to agree, it looks too near sting and stink written down.

EhricLovesTeamQhuay · 17/04/2013 10:28

It looks odd on its own, unless you are from a Nordic background.

SarahAndFuck · 17/04/2013 11:36

I like it. Love Scandi names.

And I've always loved Ingrid and Astrid. I did consider Tove for a girl, after Tove Jansson, but DH said no and then we had a boy anyway.

Sunnysummer · 17/04/2013 11:50

Most of the girls I know with this name in Scandinavia are actually spelt Stine - but I realise that this would be even odder in the UK! Have you considered using Christina or even Kristina (also a bit Scandi) and having Stina as a nickname?

TiggerWearsATriteSmile · 17/04/2013 11:52

Stina sounds a bit like a medical procedure, sorry. I wouldn't use it.

Manoodledo · 17/04/2013 18:46

Sarah Ingrid and Astrid were our only two girls names last time round (was a boy), but oddly we are less keen this time. Wow, Tove, I don't even know quite how it's pronounced.

Stine (pronounced Stina) is a well known name here in norway. But I don't think it translates so well to england...
Other nice names in dd and ds's class:
Fredrike/a
Rikka
Kaia
Sanna
Angelina
Ebba
