Husband loves the name Ty (Tye) for a boy.

I'm really trying to love it too as I pretty much forced my favourite name on him for our first son.

Reason I am a bit unsure is I think it sounds a bit nicknamey?

Can I have your thoughts please?

WizardofOs is her mum a belly dancer? If so we know the same one!

Ty looks too short to me, but then I don't like Tye. Tai is probably a better spelling, but I may be a bit weird with my three letter minimum rule!!

MoominsYonisAreScary · 17/04/2013 07:55

I don't see why not, there are a couple of boys called Tye here, don't know how they are spelled though

SneezySnatcher · 17/04/2013 08:10

DH's cousin is Tadgh, which is lovely. Great suggestion!

2cats2many · 17/04/2013 08:20

Makes me think of the surfer dude from Extreme Makeover: Home edition.

GiveMeVegemite · 17/04/2013 09:33

Oooo I do like the Tai spelling a bit better, makes it look more like a 'real' name.

I think people in Oz would look at the name Tadgh and go 'Tad-ghhh?' I love the pronunciation, but the spelling would leave most people quite confused in my part of the world.

Thanks for all your input though, it has really helped.

No no no to Tai! It's a style of knickers.

GiveMeVegemite · 17/04/2013 19:43

kitten hahaha thanks. Dodged a bullet there!

I've got a nephew Kai, I see no reason Ty/Tai/Tye couldn't stand alone just as well.

monsterchild · 18/04/2013 03:14

My cousin's name is Ty.

ripsishere · 18/04/2013 03:26

Dreadful name. Sounds more like an item of neckwear or a a person's nationality.

ilikeyoursleeves · 18/04/2013 03:36

Sorry but I really don't like it.

CheerfulYank · 18/04/2013 03:40

Not a huge fan, but there are so many Tysons/Tylers/Tyes etc here in the States. It's a bit..well, we don't use the word chavvy and I wouldn't if we did, but that's the type of name it would be here.

MakeTeaNotWar · 18/04/2013 03:49

I have a Tadhg. He's gorgeous Grin

BinarySolo · 18/04/2013 07:16

Grin @ CheerfulYank

AThingInYourLife · 18/04/2013 07:23

Tadhg does not have a "soft" g at the end. It's a fully pronounced g.

It does, however, have a soft Irish T at the start.

It's more Thigh-g than Tie-g.

Lovely name, but not really at all like Ty.

Dressinggrown · 18/04/2013 07:33

I personally would categorise that under Chav names.

I know that sound harsh and maybe I'm a snob and I'm know many people would consider the names of my DC as pretentious but just giving my opinion, which after all you asked for, so no offence meant. Smile

usualsuspect · 18/04/2013 07:39

It's a great name, I love it.

bootsycollins · 18/04/2013 07:41

Makes me think of Mike Tyson and dog breeds with violent reputations. I like Kit as a short boys name. No offence intended just giving an honest opinion.

WizardofOs · 18/04/2013 07:45

BinarySolo - no not a belly dancer that I know of. This Tai is in her 20's. I think named so because her Dad is a martial arts instructor!

usualsuspect · 18/04/2013 07:47

My cat is called Tai. Grin

Hes hasn't got a violent reputation though.

bootsycollins · 18/04/2013 09:14

Wizard as in tai quando?

Eek now I'm thinking Thai "massage"

Tai bo, is that some kind of martial arts inspired Zumba type exercise thing?

Thai stick?

bootsycollins · 18/04/2013 09:15

Mmmmmm mai tai!

KittenOfDoom · 18/04/2013 09:48

AThingInYourLife these things often depend on one's accent.

lisson · 18/04/2013 11:01

Ty - sounds either asian or like its short for something else (such as Tyrone). I'm not a fan of it TBH.

What does your DH like about it? It can't be shortened maybe?

ItsYonliMe · 18/04/2013 11:04

Sounds a bit like an Ozzie or American name to me.
