We really love Scout for a girl but it doesn't fit the surname at all. I like the idea of a noun as a name but I'm drawing a blank - bar flower names which I'm not keen on. Any thoughts? We also liked Sailor but I we have changed our minds about that too!

That's very judgmental KittenOfDoom. A name is just a syllable or two. Who are you to say that parent shouldn't chose a name they love. The OP isn't going to call her daughter Jane or Ann. An alternative name is what she'll be called - it just depends on what goes better with their last name

AuntieBrenda · 12/04/2013 19:57

OP please don't be put off - all the names suggested I this thread are lovely

OiMissus · 12/04/2013 20:09

Love the name suggestions here. Love Scout.
Bog off kitten. If you don't have anything nice to say,...

So glad everyone likes Scout. To me it's a really strong, brave name. I like the fact that it can't be shortened too - no nicknames for Scout!

We don't have a middle name yet but I'd like to choose something that relates to my side of the family as the baby will have my partner's surname.

This thread has been so cheering. Thanks all!

Mortified, that's sweet! I am all for a bit of whimsy, especially middle names.

Oh Doom, get a bit adventurous! You are entitled to your opinion, I guess, boring though it is.

party, I agree, it is strong. I'd also say sassy and fun, and adventurous. I do like nicknames though, I like options. But hey, your baby.

Rhubarbgarden · 12/04/2013 23:41

Personally I'd avoid Scout in combination with Childs. It just sounds a bit... daft. Sorry. I think there would be sniggering.

How about Linnet?

Wereonourway · 12/04/2013 23:49

Ooooh Kitten, quite harsh I think.

Love love love love Scout op, TKAM my favourite book of all time, go for it! If you love it, use it. I think it goes with your surname quite well!

twinklestar2 · 12/04/2013 23:56

Use Amethyst! I love that name but not brave enough!

MummyBurrows · 13/04/2013 00:09

I'm not keen on scout personally, probably a bit too unusual for my tastes but I think Serenity as someone suggested would sound lovely with Childs also Jade, raine and as another suggestion, how about Storm? Unusual but nice I think.xx

mathanxiety · 13/04/2013 04:59

Scout is a name I always misread as Scut.

I came across a Journey (a girl) a few weeks ago.

Serenity is a brand of women's incontinence products.

mathanxiety · 13/04/2013 05:01

*misreading some words is a problem of mine though..

DonDrapersAltrEgoBigglesDraper · 13/04/2013 06:09

Scout is not to my taste, but I can understand the appeal.

However... one-syllable first names just do not sound great with one-syllable surnames. Especially when they're both noun names. Honestly, the combo sounds odd, and not in a quirky way.

Sokmonsta · 13/04/2013 06:35

Dd2's middle name is Temperance.

Beamae · 13/04/2013 07:08

Pepper is an amazing name! That just shot straight to the tip of my list. Then my husband said 'do you mean like Peppa Pig'. Boo!

Beamae · 13/04/2013 07:09

Id say go with Scout. Two single syllable names sounds punchy.

Bowlersarm · 13/04/2013 09:53

DonDrapers 'one-syllable first names just do not sound with one-syllable surnames'

Doesn't seem to have done any harm for Hugh Grant, Jude Law, Sean Penn, Tom Cruise, Will Smith

thepartysover · 13/04/2013 10:40

Beamae - I LOVE Pepper but the piggy connotation is too much for me...!

Scout still top of the list, though I appreciate what others have said about two word names together. It's what jarred for me in the first instance.

garlicyoni · 13/04/2013 11:07

twinkle, why would you have to be 'brave' to name a child Amethyst? Confused

To me, one-syllable names together sound dynamic; confident. Scout Childs sounds cool as well as all that!

twinklestar2 · 13/04/2013 11:52

Cause it's not a classic name, I don't class it as a safe option (which is what I would go for!)

garlicyoni · 13/04/2013 12:19

I see what you mean. Thanks.

MadameJosephine · 13/04/2013 18:39

sokmonsta I love Temperance, what a fantastic name!

Sokmonsta · 13/04/2013 20:06

Kind of influenced unwittingly by Bones I think. I'd have loved it as a first name, but I wasn't that brave and it doesn't sound as good with her first name second.

SuedeEffectPochette · 14/04/2013 22:04

I am not sure that I understand the Scout thing. Why is it such a great name? How is it different to Twig or Bush, Brownie or Beaver? It doesn't really mean anything does it?

LentilAsAnything · 14/04/2013 22:36

For me, it conjures up images of an adventurous spirit, and a child with a bit of character about them.
It has far more meaning than twig or brownie, and you know it, you are just being obnoxious and rude.
