Ruairidh or Rory

hubby is a Scot, live in England.

If you live in Scotland, Ruaridh will be pronounced Rooory. If you live in England no one will know how to pronounce it. Either way, it is way too hard to spell. If you wan to call him Rory, That's the way to spell it.

I'm always disappointed to read comments like FrauGau's, way to hard to spell.................... I bet you wouldn't say this to ....lets not go there.

If I can't spell someones name I ask politely. We have a Ruairidh, when you spell it it has a lovely lilt to it.

He's been called Rudi & Rooney , normally on holiday, and some folk who just say Rory (though completely different) and we don't get hung up on spelling

Wait till the laddie arrives you'll know what name suits him.

I know this is an old thread but for anyone facing a similar dilemma, Ruairidh is not pronounced Rory. Spelling it that way and pouncing it Rory would be like calling your kid Gemma and pronouncing it Jenna. I have known several people called Ruairidh and I am also Scottish and it is pronounced more like Roory. The proper Gaelic pronunciation will be different again. But it's not the same name as Rory.

I would not pronounce them the same Roo are ee for Ruaidhri and roary for Rory. That is my best written version of the Gaelic pronounciation.

I wouldn't pronounce them the same. I know children of both spellings and they are always pronounced different. Roo-ree and roar-ee

Rory - it's super cute :) I don't think many people will know how to say/spell the other one!
