Should I (dad) join the brave new world?

Hi Mums, sorry to crash mums net but Dad here.
I need some guidance.
Already dad to a 3 year old with a name constantly in the top 10.
Next one is due in 2 weeks for the blue team and wifey and I can't agree on a name. I am mr safe. Safe names bring now expectation, judgment, or ridicule.

Mrs unsafe wants something that isn't 'boring' and says I need to get with the times. Something that is different but not so zaney

Anyway, long short, she wants Hugo. A name I haven't been able to fully commit to . I constantly hear myself in the situation of the supermarket or (hopefully) on the football sidelines shouting his name and everyone turning to look at me with "you called your kid Hugo? Phaah!"

Being welsh I wanted Huw, my son has a welsh middle name so I wanted to continue with the theme. Huw James. Mrs would like Hugo James. So I suppose a nn would be Huw. So both winners right? But to me what's the point in calling him Hugo if we are going to constantly call him Huw?

Should I step into the light and into the brave new world? Is Hugo a bit of a whacky name or am I just mr boring?

I'm a non-Welshie and live in a naice posh area just outside London. Personally I'd go for Huw not Hugo, I think that Huw Stephens and Huw Edwards mean lots of folks know the name and could pronounce it correctly.

Huw would be weird IMHO without the Welsh connection, but as you have that, go for it!

I love Huw and have recently suggested it to DH who is trying to veto.

Love Hugo, (I do shop at Waitrose though ), and it would have been in my list, but our surname starts with H, so it sounded weird.

I do think that Huw would be great if you are welsh.

My friend's son is called Lucas but also gets called Luc (Luke) and I actually thought he was called Luc until I heard him called Lucas.

I'm in Yorkshire and Huw or Hugh would be fine here, no snobby. I wouldn't think oooh I bet he's a bit posh [bugrin] I think it is nice to have welsh names if you are welsh, even if it is just a middle name.

Honestly when they start school and you hear all the names other parents have called their children, you will wonder what you were worried about. I think you need to look at the crazy names mentioned on this BBC news page Countries that regulate names

Yep, Hugo is great and Huw makes a good nickname and compromise.

I'm sure my class mate spelt it Hugh not Huw, but I'm guessing the latter is the proper Welsh spelling (mine was a very English bit of Wales).

Hugo is snooty South East and being a Yorkshire lass brought up in Wales I can't agree to that [buwink]

If you decide on Huw just remember if you or ds ever move to Scotland there's a chance he'll inherit the nn Shug. I realised it's a different spelling but all Hugh's are Shug or Shuggie up here.

Think Hugo's close enough that it might happen for him too.

Prefer Huw spelled Hugh - it just looks wrong to me the other way.

Love Hugo and Huw. Not sure what the issue is here. Surely you can put Hugo on the BC and call him Hugo/ Hugh/ Huw?

I agree, Hugo is awful, sounds too posh. Try and put your foot down about this. Remember he still has to go to school when older, and he might be made fun of. I can imagine stuff like "you go Hugo" etc.

Huw is much better, its different and cool. As an alternative, have you thought about the name "Zippey"?

Oh my goodness, just image how scarred he will be if someone in the playground says, "You go Hugo". Shocking.

I like Hugo Weaving the actor though - think the baddie in The Matrix or the goodie in V for Vendetta.

If DD had been a boy then she would have been Hugh Alexander. With the nickname Huey as a baby. Hugh as an adult. I originally liked Hugo but thought it might be a bit faddy and that I might get bored of it over time.

I couldn't really imagine shouting 'Hugo' across morrisons either. Not here in the depths of Yorkshire [bugrin]

I love Hugo, but could never use it because my accent is embarrassingly posh (I am not allowed to shout anything from the touch line) and I make it into about 8 syllables. But I do actually like Huw or Hugh better- could you call him Hugo for a "Sunday name" and use Huw for everyday?

We have a 3 year old Hugo.

He gets called Hugs, Huggsy, or Baby Hugs

We get so many compliments on his name now despite the faces when he was born

I don't see this as any different from calling a Joseph, Joe - or a Joshua, Josh - or an Alexander, Alex ...... add your own example ....

I'd go Huw, but then I don't live in Wales, where it might be commonplace and boring. Not keen on Hugo at all, sorry, just too posh. For me it's in the same bracket as Monty and Hilary.

Hugo is not out there. My dp wants to use it and I love it but I've seen an influx of baby Hugos recently so it's put me off as although its not quite there yet, I think it's gaining numbers fast! But if popular is your thing you'll be fine. (And in all honesty I silently sigh when I see yet another over popular name announcement. So boring! Don't assume people aren't judging because its popular)

We had a pony called Hugo so I prefer Huw for a person :)
Both names are lovely though and James works very well as mn for both.

I do NOT think of Hugo as anything unusual and dont think any will turn around looking odly at you for Hugo.. It is fairly mainstream in my opinion.
