Baby names

Edith or Sylvie

We've been set on Edith for a while bit I'm wavering the more I hear people grumble about it. Not that we've told anyone we like it but they know we like old names and have been guessing/passing comments on what they consider awful Sad
Sylvie we also love but it's very close to my DM's name and our sons name is a variation of DF's name so I don't know if that's a bit silly although unintentional.

Any thoughts.......?

I saw an Edita on a talent show here in Germany.

I love both Edith and Sylvie though so can't help you further!

unless you do one as a middle name and use both! no I'm not sitting on the fence at all, me, oh no!

Didn't Lily Allen call her first born Edith and get a tonne of stick in the media for picking such an old fashioned name? I think it's a pretty but too old fashioned name for a child but dd would certainly grow into it,I'm also not keen on sylvie for the same reason bt I can see that it would certainly grow on people once they got used to it and its definitely not a common name which is always good!

If I had to choose I'd pick Edith but I would shorten it to Edie in day to day use,if only so it doesn't sound so granny-ish.....all depends on whether you care what people think or not. Also try to think to the future, would either name result in potential bullying at school for being such an "old lady" name? Nobody likes to think of their child getting bullied but names are usually the main cause for bullying. I'd certainly err on the side of caution if you go with either name personally, especially if there's really nothing more "modern" you can come up with, perhaps swap Edith/sylvie with the middle name you have picked out so you can still have the name you love but with a first name that won't spark any bullies interest? Just a thought that's all,it is obviously up to you and your dp what you choose to call your child :) xx

Edith was my nana's name. She was a beautiful woman, inside and out, my grandad called her Edie. The name is due a revival.

Todays children won't associate it with being a granny name and probably won't even have heard of it so I wouldn't worry about bullying.

I'm completely biased, and I never go on baby name threads Grin
