Katherine?

Would you consider this a classic name that would be fine for a possible new DD, or a bit too out of fashion?

I really like Katherine, and like the possible nicknames, so that's my main concern about it really.

I love the name, but prefer the C spelling. I think it's a classic.

Madamecastafiore · 25/03/2013 12:40

I really like it and Kitty for a nickname , prefer spelt with K than C too.

ChunkyPickle · 25/03/2013 12:42

It's a classic, there will always be K/Catherines, just like there will always be James's

cocolocopoco · 25/03/2013 12:47

Middleton.

Sorry, I think it will date quickly now KM is so ubiquitous.

FunSizedMum · 25/03/2013 12:51

I love it... but am very biased! Grin Our DD is Catherine nn Cate or Caty. We prefered the C rather than the K, but not sure why really. I just felt it was softer and more feminine. DH was determined to spell it with a C rather than a K, as he maintained the C spelling is "the French way" and with a K is "the German way". Hmm Pretty sure he's made that up though... Either way it's a timeless classic imo, never wildly popular and yet never wildly "out there". We've had loads of nice comments about her name and there have never been other C/Katherines in the same class as DD.

The problem with the name is the constant need to spell it out - is it
Katharine ?
Katherine ?
Catherine ?
Catharine ?
Kathryn ?
Cathryn ?

But otherwise it is a nice name Smile.

Poco might be right. We may be about to witness something of a revival in popularity after Kate & Wills finally take to the throne, although who knows when that will be. But there are so many variations in the nn that I always felt that it was the kind of name that meant DD could be anything that she wanted to be as she grows up.

NotTreadingGrapes · 25/03/2013 12:58

No, it won't date any more than Elizabeth did. And I don't reckon there are any more Katherines around than there were Dianas when she popped up.

Timeless and elegant. I love it. (But prefer the C spelling as well, don't know why tbh)

cocolocopoco · 25/03/2013 13:01

It is a very nice name though, so if you like it, use it.

ArabellaBeaumaris · 25/03/2013 13:06

I think it is a nice timeless name, I doubt it will date due to Middleton.

I prefer the C spelling though (it's DD's middle name).

Total classic - I have a 13 year old one, spelt as you did in op.

You just get used to saying "with a k and an I-n-e". It's easier to spell than our surname anyway.

She was strictly "Katherine" until she was 10, when she decided she'd like to be Kathy. Now its about 50/50.

I love her name, I wanted it for a daughter since I was a little girl and it's perfect!

weegiemum · 25/03/2013 13:12

It goes well with other names too - we also have a Rachel, and ds is Aidan, and they soundgood together.

PurpleStorm · 25/03/2013 14:00

Thanks for the responses - looks like most people think it's a classic name, which is good Smile

Also, I'm not convinced that Kate Middleton being a Catherine is really going to have that much impact on baby name trends - after all, Princess Diana was a very popular and high profile royal, and that didn't translate into Diana becoming a popular baby name AFAIK.

Yes it is a classic name and not out of date.

weegiemum · 25/03/2013 14:05

Diana did become quite popular!

I started teaching in 1994, 13 years after their wedding. In my s2 and s3 classes (yr 8&9 - remember dc in Scotland start school a little older) I had 4 Dianas in each! Later on there was an onslaught of Kylies and Charlenes!

I suspect "Kate" might become popular. I think though that whichever name they give their daughter will really take off!

Sailormercury · 25/03/2013 14:10

I love it! It's very elegant.
