Getting to the nn ''Red'' for a boy

Hiya, not asking for me glances over at gorgeous snuggly newborn Elowen as I type this but a lady I met on the maternity ward a couple of weeks ago had a little boy and has been calling him ''Red'' ever since.
At first I was a bit Hmm but it suits him so much and I cant imagine him as anything else now, iyswim.

They haven't registered him yet and after directing her to Mumsnet last week, she has now asked for help with a full or given name which could lend to the nn Red.

I know you could say that you could call him for example, Thomas and still get the nn Red, but she would like something with a closer link. Sonographer told her baby was going to be a girl, hence current situation and I don't think little Red is going to be happy as a Zoe...

Thanks in advance.

For our to-be-born-in-10-weeks DS we've decided on Robin and have slipped into calling him Red (from 'Robin Red Breast' I guess?)

Especially since we've decided on Edward too for middle name - R from Robin and the ED from Edward ifykwim?

The character's full name is Ellis Boyd Redding so how about Ellis? Or maybe too linked to the film, not sure if she wants that.

Ross Edward
Richard Edward
or just Richard?
Frederick
Redmond

Only ever known two. It's a good name. Knew a Jared and he was fond of a drop so he was known as jarred.

Tell her I like it. It sounds more solid than Ted which is a stuffed toy (although I don't dislike it). could never get to grips with Ned. Awful. Red though, that is a great name!

Redmond is very Irish though, I think there was some political figure called Redmond which might explain why it's not rare in Ireland. My ignorance is shocking, I@ll google and get back to you.

Rosso is Italian for Red, then Ross Edward leads to Red two ways!

Just googled Redmond, and on google.ie , it is certainly not an unusual name. Pages and pages of Redmonds come up.

I think that actor Ryan O'Neal called his son Redmond. Was it a character from the Film Barry Lyndon. That was a beautiful (but long) film.

If none of the names already suggested leap out at her, she could always name her son something traditional like Thomas and give him the middle name Red.

Thanks guys for all your help - she has decided on (drum roll)...

Reuben Ellis.

Small epiphany a couple of hours ago when she 'remembered' (ahem) that her dp's surname began with a 'D' so her ds's initials are R.E.D.

Thanks so much for your help :)

I agree with just give him any name you like and say his nickname is Red. And if it doesn't catch on there's not much you can do about it. But not Red for the actual name. Or failing that you could give him three names initials R.E.D. and then surname.
