My list of girls' names - thoughts please?

Eva
Jemimah

Marianne
Tabitha

Surname v common so want something a bit unusual (which rules out Ella and Eva, I guess, but I do love them so)

Whaddaya think?

They are all pretty names.

Clementine is gorgeous but I suspect hard to wear on a day-to-day basis. Also, I'm never sure whether the name is Clementeen or Clementyne. Help?

Eva and Ella are pretty but a bit too on trend for me.

Jemimah is lovely but, in my opinion, should properly be Jemima (without the H).

Verity is nice but I prefer Felicity.

Marianne is nice but I don't like Marion, which I fear it could be pronounced as. I also like Mariella.

Tabitha is probably my favourite from your list.

Thanks for your comments, we are edging towards Marianne. It's the only one we can agree on actually. I don't mind Marion, actually. I think SJP has one. Also like Marion Cotillard, the French actress. But prefer the name Marianne overall. I can see it on a baby and an adult. Ok, I think I've convinced myself now!

I love Tabitha, it's one of my favourites. I would consider Marianne for the Austen connection, but I'd be reluctant because there is a Marianne in my work place and I would feel weird like I had copied, what with it being quite rare.

Yes, that might seem a bit weird, I guess! Love the Austen connection. She is arguably her best character. I think of Mariannes as being quite spirited and feisty - thinking of Marianne Faithfull too.

I think they're all lovely.

I don't think " Jemimah" needs the 'H' though. It's a gorgeous name that doesn't need anything to make it more "yooneek". Also Mimi and Jemmy are very sweet diminutives.

No no no, go the conventional spelling (unless you mean Marian, which is also nice - but I must prefer Marianne). It's a lovely name; of your list I also love Verity.

I was joking about MarryAn! And Jemimah was a typo. We would only ever use traditional spellings. Glad Marianne is the favourite, I think I love it the most. Thanks all.

Thanks to all who replied. I am still hung up on Marianne. But just wondering, it doesn't sound dated, does it? I mean, I know granny chic names are 'in' but Marianne doesn't fall in to that category, I don't think. Would most people consider it timeless? That is what we are aiming for, rather than trendy.

Marianne to me is a strong,yet feminine,elegant name. It wouldn't fit into the granny-chic category in my opinion,but it would sit nicely alongside peers named Florence,Mabel,Violet and the like. Hope that helps. x

Avoid Eva or any Eve variant. It is this generations Sarah - one third of the girls in DDs class called Eve/Eva/Evie. Ella almost as common - she won't thank you for it!

I have a sister named Maryann .
Pronounced as Mary Ann ( a 1960s baby )
I think it's quite classy , not dated ( what time would it date to ?) and quite obvious how to pronounce and spell .

Marianne stood out from all the rest to me. I don't think it's ever been especially fashionable, so it doesn't date.

It's a time-honoured variant of Mary and Mary Ann. Everyone will know how to pronounce it because of the extended ending. Lovely name.

Marianne is the personification of France, and she gets a Leonard Cohen song into the bargain. What's not to like? Grin

Thanks, yes we still love it. Shame all the Eva names have become so popular. I guess it's because they are all so pretty.

Anyway, my only worry about Marianne is that it's dated in a 'middle aged' way. But maybe that generation of names is next for a revival anyway!

And it's not enough to put us off anyway. I think it is the perfect mix of traditional, beautiful, cool and just unusual enough.

Yep, still love it!

Well I am middle-aged, and I've never met anyone called Marianne, so it must be quite rare in my generation too.

"Traditional, beautiful, cool and just unusual enough" = nail on head methinks. :)
