Eva
Ella
Tabitha.

Love these.

Gwennan · 22/03/2013 10:56

They are all pretty names.

Clementine is gorgeous but I suspect hard to wear on a day-to-day basis. Also, I'm never sure whether the name is Clementeen or Clementyne. Help?

Eva and Ella are pretty but a bit too on trend for me.

Jemimah is lovely but, in my opinion, should properly be Jemima (without the H).

Verity is nice but I prefer Felicity.

Marianne is nice but I don't like Marion, which I fear it could be pronounced as. I also like Mariella.

Tabitha is probably my favourite from your list.

candyflossisevil · 22/03/2013 10:57

Marianne is lovely, not keen on the rest. Also like marianna, said aana not Anna iykwim

loulatallulah · 22/03/2013 11:05

Thanks for your comments, we are edging towards Marianne. It's the only one we can agree on actually. I don't mind Marion, actually. I think SJP has one. Also like Marion Cotillard, the French actress. But prefer the name Marianne overall. I can see it on a baby and an adult. Ok, I think I've convinced myself now!

I love Tabitha, it's one of my favourites. I would consider Marianne for the Austen connection, but I'd be reluctant because there is a Marianne in my work place and I would feel weird like I had copied, what with it being quite rare.

loulatallulah · 22/03/2013 12:01

Yes, that might seem a bit weird, I guess! Love the Austen connection. She is arguably her best character. I think of Mariannes as being quite spirited and feisty - thinking of Marianne Faithfull too.

Also love Tabitha but not sure it goes with surname, on reflection.

Marianne is my fave. Eva & Ella are nice, too.
Really don't like the others, sorry.

Eskino · 22/03/2013 12:16

I think they're all lovely.

I don't think " Jemimah" needs the 'H' though. It's a gorgeous name that doesn't need anything to make it more "yooneek". Also Mimi and Jemmy are very sweet diminutives.

loulatallulah · 22/03/2013 12:31

Apologies, the H was a typo. Not trying to be unique, just addled by hormones!

loulatallulah · 22/03/2013 12:32

Although what does everyone think of MarryAn?!

OP posts:
EvenIfYouSeeAPoppy · 22/03/2013 12:37

No no no, go the conventional spelling (unless you mean Marian, which is also nice - but I must prefer Marianne). It's a lovely name; of your list I also love Verity.

EvenIfYouSeeAPoppy · 22/03/2013 12:37

I meant "I must say I prefer Marianne".

loulatallulah · 22/03/2013 12:42

I was joking about MarryAn! And Jemimah was a typo. We would only ever use traditional spellings. Glad Marianne is the favourite, I think I love it the most. Thanks all.

Definitely Marianne. Beautiful name!

loulatallulah · 22/03/2013 14:03

Definitely a clear winner! Thanks.

Tranquilitybaby · 22/03/2013 23:53

Eva
Verity
Tabitha

In that order x

loulatallulah · 23/03/2013 14:15

Thanks to all who replied. I am still hung up on Marianne. But just wondering, it doesn't sound dated, does it? I mean, I know granny chic names are 'in' but Marianne doesn't fall in to that category, I don't think. Would most people consider it timeless? That is what we are aiming for, rather than trendy.

OP posts:
wedontplaywithelectrics · 23/03/2013 14:32

Marianne to me is a strong, yet feminine, elegant name. It wouldn't fit into the granny-chic category in my opinion, but it would sit nicely alongside peers named Florence,Mabel,Violet and the like. Hope that helps. x

loulatallulah · 23/03/2013 15:22

Thank you. Much appreciated. Yep, I think it is the one!

Avoid Eva or any Eve variant. It is this generations Sarah - one third of the girls in DDs class called Eve/Eva/Evie. Ella almost as common - she won't thank you for it!

Doilooklikeatourist · 24/03/2013 20:46

I have a sister named Maryann .
Pronounced as Mary Ann ( a 1960s baby )
I think it's quite classy , not dated ( what time would it date to ?) and quite obvious how to pronounce and spell .

KittenOfDoom · 24/03/2013 20:48

Marianne stood out from all the rest to me. I don't think it's ever been especially fashionable, so it doesn't date.

It's a time-honoured variant of Mary and Mary Ann. Everyone will know how to pronounce it because of the extended ending. Lovely name.

Marianne is the personification of France, and she gets a Leonard Cohen song into the bargain. What's not to like? Grin

loulatallulah · 25/03/2013 14:34

Thanks, yes we still love it. Shame all the Eva names have become so popular. I guess it's because they are all so pretty.

Anyway, my only worry about Marianne is that it's dated in a 'middle aged' way. But maybe that generation of names is next for a revival anyway!

And it's not enough to put us off anyway. I think it is the perfect mix of traditional, beautiful, cool and just unusual enough.

Yep, still love it!

OP posts:
KittenOfDoom · 25/03/2013 14:42

Well I am middle-aged, and I've never met anyone called Marianne, so it must be quite rare in my generation too.

"Traditional, beautiful, cool and just unusual enough" = nail on head methinks. :)
