...and it's Austin. DH LOVES it, and I like it but am not 100% sold. Is it too American; and is it one of those names that will be lovely now but very popular in years to come e.g. Lily, Jack?

I quite like it but like you I'm not in love with it. Are there any names you like?

soontobeslendergirl · 15/03/2013 13:26

I know one adult Austin and one 11 year old. It's an Irish name - it was the adults Mum's maiden name, not sure about why the boys parents chose it.

I like it, it's easy to spell and pronounce, not very common - I'd say it is more of a classic than one that's likely to be hugely popular.

Other names in a similar vein I would say are:

Elliot
Miles
Andrew
Merrick
Keir
Laurence

I really like Austin though.

SashaSashays · 15/03/2013 13:28

I like it but I have noticed lots of people mentioning it so I think it is becoming more popular.

I wouldn't put it in the same category as Jack (John) though, which has been in the top 100 for over 100 years.

TenthMuse · 15/03/2013 14:49

I quite like it, and I usually dislike anything too surnamey or 'American' - seems quite classic, probably because it's been around for a while (I've met a couple of elderly Austins, and one little boy). Definitely not too common - I teach, and have never come across one. Also have feline associations, though, as Austin was the name of my neighbour's cat!

If you're not completely sold, I'd give it a while before you totally make your mind up - you may well come up with something you like better!

My Ds has an Austin and an Aston in his class. We live in oz and lots of unusual names here!

Like Austin though.

RooneyMara · 15/03/2013 15:04

Sorry, it does remind me of the Austin Maxi. and Princess.

ivykaty44 · 15/03/2013 15:06

I knew an Austin he would be about 40 now Grin not really into the name but it isn't offensive

Aston reminds me of the football club Villa and yes I to remember the car

My favourite name at the moment is Ivan though so take that into account Grin

Yama · 15/03/2013 15:08

There was an Austin in my year at school so he's be about 37 now. Nickname Aussie.

I have never known another.

GingerPCatt · 15/03/2013 15:10

Austin is a good name as long as you don't name any future children Dallas or Huston like a family I know. And they're not even from Texas.

BeeBopDingALing · 15/03/2013 15:14

It's a good name, I like it. Much nicer than most of the classic old fogey names you see on here.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/03/2013 16:45

I don't like it, sorry.

MoonHare · 15/03/2013 16:53

I'm not keen, mostly because as a child we had both an Austin Maxi and an Austin Princess! So for me it means old 70s cars. I don't think it sounds American though, in spite of Austin Powers and Austin, Texas. There's also Austin Mitchell the corduroy jacket wearing MP too.

But all that said if you like it then it doesn't matter what springs to the mind of anyone else because if you name your little boy Austin then it will be him that springs into the minds of everyone who knows you when they hear it.

peppertree · 15/03/2013 17:05

no, don't like it, too adult a name for a baby

BeeBopDingALing · 15/03/2013 17:08

Peppertree, he's only going to be a baby for a very small part of his life. It's far more important to give a child a name that suits as a baby/child/teenager/adult.

Mintyy · 15/03/2013 17:12

Pmsl at "too adult a name for a baby" Grin

chickensaladagain · 15/03/2013 17:13

Currently watching Austin and ally on the Disney channel

That being said, I like it, only known one -Scottish guy I went to uni with, twin brother Alistair Grin

lljkk · 15/03/2013 17:38

buttercrumble · 15/03/2013 17:42

No dont like at all..

birdofthenorth · 15/03/2013 19:00

I like it. Don't know any young ones, and I know lots of babies and toddlers.

ellesabe · 15/03/2013 20:00

I wanted Austin for a boy but dh said he wouldn't ever name a child after a car. We had a girl anyway.

She's called Cleo.

Great name! Love it!

StrawberryMojito · 15/03/2013 20:09

You both like it...go for it.

MyHeadWasInTheSandNowNot · 15/03/2013 20:13

If you don't love it, you should keep looking.

(I don't like it, but that really doesn't matter)

mildred37 · 15/03/2013 21:39

Thanks for the feedback. It seems like it's a real marmite name! It is the only one we both thought was nice, but it may turn out that when he arrives he looks nothing like an Austin so who knows!

And yes it reminds me of Austin Powers too....hence the reluctance!
