Both granny's don't like the names we have chosen

We are expecting our first, and their first grand child in summer.

Quickly decided on names (shockingly)

Told his dmum a few weeks ago and she laughed.
Told my mum and she said how awful!

We want Herbert - Bertie for a boy, and connie for a girl.

It's Bertie / Herbert they have objected to.

If it was connie, then we have other names, but no reserve names which we agree on for a boy.

What are the options?

Herbert isn't great to be honest. Sounds like a caricature of a little posh annoying child. Bertie is quite cute though- although I would suggest reading 44 Scotland Street by Alexander Macall Smith- the Bertie in this is very funny.

Actually to be completely blunt- Herbert is terrible. Really bad. He will be bullied. Think of the teachers constantly calling out his full name at roll call. Even if you send him private it's still terrible.

Timetoask · 15/03/2013 15:21

OP, are you upset
a) because the grannies didn't like the names; or
b) because they told you they didn't like the names.

Would you have preferred it if they lied to you?

Personally, I think Herbert is awful. I think Connie isn't great. But, it's your child and as long as you are confident in your choice then don't worry about other people's taste. As for grannies, well, honesty is the best policy I think, they don't like the names and they told you.

If you both like the names you decided onthen thats all that matters. YOUR baby YOUR choice. I say go for it!
You have to accept that you cant please everyone all of the time and people will always have an opinion and they will delight in sharing if you let them. I think Herbert is lovely with either bertie or herbie as nn.
Variety is the spice of life or we'd all be walking around with the same names looking the same and who wants that -shudder at the thoughtWink
Yes some children / people are cruel and tease people because of their name but just as much for other reasons ; where someone lives, the clothes you wear etc, etc so dont be put off.

My DParents were quite off about our newest DS's name - and we didn't tell them until after he arrived Shock. Rude! Still, they were the same about our oldest's name at first, too, even though neither are even slightly unusual Hmm.

Love Herbert, Albert and Gilbert.
Definitely prefer Bert(ie) to Herbie, but it's your child and therefore your choice, not GP's!

thistlelicker · 16/03/2013 21:40

Yes it's your choice
But terribly
Old fashioned is Herbert! Connie is pretty

Stixswhichtwizzle · 16/03/2013 21:44

Love Bertie but I agree with pp^^ I'd go with Albert.

ThedementedPenguin · 16/03/2013 21:47

Op seriously I wouldn't stress too much about it. If you want to call him Herbert/Bertie then go ahead.

My ds is Herbie and I've never heard a bad word when people ask his name. Everyone has different opinions, just do what you and your Dh want to do and screw the rest.

ZZZenAgain · 16/03/2013 21:53

I don't like the names so I am with the grannies. I don't what you meant by asking what the options are. I suppose the options are that you either go ahead regardless with Herbert/Connie, you choose completely different names or you stick with Herbert/Connie but use them as second name and use a different first name.

DontmindifIdo · 16/03/2013 21:58

Don't play games with 'worse' names, say you are both agreed, and if they don't like it then that's a pity, but it's really none of their business.

Grandparents are often arsey about chosen baby names. I think its two-fold - generational differences and the fact they are no longer in control.
